I used a 60mm valve stem tube when mounting the Vittoria Rubino 23mm tires and there was barely enough room to get the pump head on the exposed portion. I then decided to use a stem nut after inflation and there was room for that, too. The good news is: This tire/rim combo are easy to mount up. I _did_ have to use one tire lever to get the last couple of inches of bead over the lip, but did not pinch the tube at all and it was in no way a struggle.

Not sure when I'm gonna get outside on these, but they sure do look and feel nice.

More info when I get some miles on 'em.

OK so finally able to get out on these wheels and also test the shoes. First ride yesterday, 2nd today.

Shoes are plenty stiff. Can definitely feel the difference between them and my Specialized S-Works. Only real issue I had (on the first ride) was that the top 'clamp' (where the boa string goes thru on the non-adjustable side) seems placed quite high up near the ankle closure. So when the boa is really cinched down, it kinda dug into the top of my instep near where my ankle bends. Now this may just be 'my anatomy' and wouldn't be a problem for others. I did a little work on them with my adjustable pliers -- basically clamping on the edge (piping) and just twisting and holding it for a few minutes to try and give it a bit of a 'set' so the very edge was kinda pointing away from the ankle hole. Seemed to work on today's ride as I never noticed the shoes. Incidentally, it was only noticeable when climbing out of the saddle. Love the easy open/close of the newer style boa closure. And it's easy to adjust on the fly, too. Plenty of room in the toe box (which is a big deal to me, anyway). I think I'm gonna like em.

Mercury M5 Wheels -- Seem to be a good solid wheel set. The Novatec freehub noise is a bit louder than a Shimano freehub, but not annoying. Stopping modulation is good and on par with any decent aluminum rim. I can tell they are slightly heavier than my Easton EC90SL tubulars shod with Conti comp gp 19's, but then,, they should be. The M5's have a deeper section, extra beef in the braking area for the clincher hook bead, slightly wider center channel and of course a 23mm clincher tire/tube combo is heavier than the Conti GP 19's on the Eastons. Yesterday's and today's weather here was warm(er) and very windy. Air temp was about 65 F and winds were 15 -20 mph gusting to about 30. I could definitely tell the difference in the M5's 55mm depth compared to my 38mm EC90SL's. However, I didn't think that the M5's were unreasonably uncontrollable in the quartering headwind or full crosswind. I could just tell that I was getting push a little -- not as much as I expected, tho. The rims have a stated 120psi max inflation limit. I was running brand new Vittoria Rubino Pro 23's at 110. I normally run my Conti 19's at 120 due to the lower total tire volume. With the wider channel on the M5's, the 110 psi was plenty enough and helped soak up some of the road buzz. Pretty comfy, all in all. Only had a strange noise when climbing out of the saddle and I suspect it is from the supplied skewers. I have a set of Shimano Ultegra hidden cam skewers coming and I'll swap them out. Will see if that has anything to do with it.

Thanks for reading

Park TM1. Kind of a bad idea, because now I notice that all my wheels need some attention. Probably need to pick up a proper truing stand next...

DesignShine Lights, tubulars and bars

Recently picked up a DesignShine headlight and taillight. Awesome...drivers give me lots of room with these lights on day or night.http://store.designshinelighting.com/default.asp

Also made an order for some tubulars...
gonna try out the Veloflex Arenbergs in 25mm.

Needed a couple of Vittoria Pave CGs in 25mm and grabbed a couple of Vittoria Corsa Elites for spares.

And finally purchased a new bar and stem for my titanium Gangl. Decided on the Deda Superleggero. Moving from my old Deda Newton that I've had since 2001.

i have the merino gloves and I don't like them. They remind of a velvet toy, not warm or comfortable, either.
