The chuck is adjustable--a little bit of tightening the knurled knob (and thus squishing down the rubber insert) will make the chuck stay on the valve stem and you mostly never touch it again, all this from over 50 years of using Silca chucks. You just have to find that sweet spot early on and then you're dialed.

Yup, ^^^

I would also add another trick for these pumps, Ziptie a new grommet to the base of the pump so if you are on the road somewhere and the grommet goes bad you have your spare. It seems to me that they are good till all of a sudden they aren't.
