Suffer thru the first day then go to bed early.

BUT, number 2..compression sox..mid to max compression..swelling means you are pooling blood in your legs and that 'can' lead to a DVT..Deep Vein Thrombosis..blood clot=bad..ask me how I know..I'll tell ya, a PE, Pulmonary Embolism..blood clots in lungs.

I travel from the US to Europe frequently and only have issues when I get there, never coming back to the US.
This said, OldP's advice is the one I follow.

Most of my flights from the US arrive in Europe in the morning and the worst thing for me to do is going to bed right away, even though I am usually really tired.

Instead I force myself to stay up till at least 9:00pm, the next day or the day after, I am almost back to normal.

3) depending on the time zones flown over and the direction of travel try and stretch your days in your home country closer to destination country for a few days before you leave.
4) when you arrive eat the meals the locals are eating (i.e. if it's morning, eat a breakfast), nap when you feel sleepy and go to bed at night even if you aren't tired.
5) wake up with the sun and get outside for a bit. If you exercise try doing it at the same time of the day in your destination country.
^^^This. Makes a big difference.

3.25 million butt-in-seat air miles here.

Two rules. One for jet lag, one for swelling.

1) Get up and walk around the plane hourly (if you're awake).
2) Upon landing get meals and activities on local time immediately.

Happy travels!

Joel

On long flights if I'm not sleeping I get up frequently. Sometimes I hang out in the galley....when the crew is not busy and with their permission. My legs need to move and stretch.

I also drink a lot of water so there is that need to get up as well.

Depending on which way I fly I might sleep some during the flight then business as normal at the destination. The first day can be tough.

In case anyone is wondering, I get aisle seats.

+1 to the reds above. I also take melatonin as soon as the sun begins to go down on the first night. While I don’t have as many miles as Joel, I have had many trips to SEA over the years and this is what I’ve come up with after lots of trial and error.

Good luck!

Sunshine and green grass (the kind that goes under your toes, not the kind you smoke (though that would probably help, too)).

Thanks all for the recommendations...and taking/applying a few of them!!

This was the furthest traveled...Penang China to Chicago yesterday and it hit me hard with a full work week ahead...with more domestic travel....going to grab some compression socks for my next flight.

On a side note a non cyclist recommend I jump on my bike to get the blood flowing....may be a good idea too

Might have missed the boat here but for future, 16 hour fast before the local time is having breakfast, water only.

I have used this method many times on 20+ hour flights and find it excellent.

ex. Vancouver Canada UTC-7 to Sydney Australia UTC+10

Land at 8 AM Tuesday Sydney (destination) (3pm Monday Vancouver) - 16 hours of fasting = stop eating Monday 4 pm (Sydney time) (11 PM Sunday Vancouver time)
