While in Manhattan I experimented with a number of commuters. For me, the Kogswell P/R in porteur mode was ideal, combining a springy, flexible (low-trail) frame, sweptback bars (Ahearne/MAP), supple 38mm tires, integrated dynamo hub lighting, fenders for foul weather, a solid platform rack (semi-custom made by Roseland Cycles)...and yes, a sturdy double-legged kickstand. That it looked so unassuming meant that I could lock up anywhere in NYC with abandon, which isn't always feasible with nicer machines. It was also an amazing kid hauler, carrying a Yepp up front and a Bobike in the back.

I ordered a Brompton folder and had it set up with hub lighting and a front bag, though never got accustomed to the ride, and sold it in a hurry.

Now that the Kogswell's frame is damaged beyond repair, I have a few Rivendells with Wald baskets, dyno lights, fenders and racks for the same purpose - they do the job well enough, though none of them match the wonderful ride and sense of purpose of the P/R.

Thanks! Fortunately the BB hasn't caused a single issue in the time I've had it.

I think it's a pretty stellar setup for my commute, especially in the winters and in foul weather. I've probably spent a little more time/effort than necessary getting it to what it is now, but I'm totally satisfied and it's been totally worth it.

It’s a Rawland Rando rack.

I have a Giant Cross city... 2012. It's their ALUXX SL alloy... super high quality frame (which they downgraded in later years), v-brakes, carbon fork and the threaded BB you mention plus room for big chunky tyres and all the rack/fender mounts you could want.

Very solid commuter rig and shouldn't be too hard to find second hand. I paid AUD$400 for mine in mint condition. Will post pics when I can.

I just ride a normal road bike because I ride 27-36 miles a day depending what routes I take. If it rains (which is rare) I ride my fixed gear and just get wet. I change at work, let my kit dry out then ride home in it at the end of the day. Not very geared out or glamorous but to me it beats riding some super heavy bike for no reason.

Thanks, not sure what year it is but late 90's is a good guess. Just recently put hollowtech cranks on it which stiffened up the pedaling feel a lot, frame is still going strong and rides awesome.

Share your commuter bike

Commuted on Spec Crux this week. Flat pedals and a backpack.

Without rack mounts on either bike, I’ve looked into the Thule pack n pedal to keep the laptop and clothes.

Anyone have experience with one of these racks? Would likely pair with their panniers.

Nice rides everyone!

Ride home yesterday:

Perhaps this post and my plan for the future

Are taking matters into my own hands
At the direction of the thread drift on this forum
...or perhaps I’m inspired by the forum folks
As in years past...
But in order to get over my greatest regret
And post positively on the commuter bike thread...
Here be it resolved—that I want to commute
On a bike each week
Until I get the entire fleet to and from work...
Anything left untouched or unridable at the end
Is on the chopping block...and will be sent packing
To find a new home!
Here’s what I have tuned up and ready to go
For the upcoming week.
The World Bicycle relief event bike!
Ready to roll...

I see mix of upright and regular bars, whenever I ride upright bar feels everything sitting on my groin/prostate, plus lack of hand positioning. Do you find that to be a problem?

My Rock Lobster is the only bike I have built up right now.

I find it to be so reliable and practical that I forget how awesome it rides.

There’s a Tubus titanium rack on there, as well as a TigR titanium lock, a silca frame pump, panniers from swift industries and a roadrunner handlebar bag. I also use MKS pedals with straps.

How is the experiment going, spidey?

Personally, I’m 2/2! But looking to add another with full fenders and racks and probably townie type bars for winter.

I had a red XO-3 set up for touring/commuting with some XTR and Suntour XC Pro bits. Definitely a bike I should have never parted with...
