They made a call today and that was that, which seems a little wonky to me. Many/most other sports have rules for what is an 'official' game spelled out in advance.
There is nothing wrong with using the pre-established, well-known, intermediate time check points for that. Those are "lines in the sand" too, in that regard, and stopping the stage clock there seems perfectly rational. Certainly more rational than trying to algorithm out everyone's time at any other arbitrarily chosen post-stage-stoppage line.

Unfair how?
"What iffing" forward is useless, and also unfair. Nobody knows how much more or less "tank" anyone had over anyone else.

It's still a moving target, chosen seemingly willy-nilly.....

Determined when the route is determined; located at very fixed, known points; published everywhere; even reconnoitered sometimes; intermediate check points hardly seem either moving or willy-nilly.

it is weird that they picked a spot with no time controls as the official ending point of the stage.

I love it when the Tour descends into chaos

Best one in years. Bring on the drama

Bernal was going to win the Tour anyway. Even Contadore said no one would hang with him the final two days in the mountains. Alliphillipe ran a good race and has heart, but it was only a matter of time. He doesn't have all that good of a team, and being in yellow most of the race takes a toll. I do hope he ends up with a podium spot but it's doubtful.

Many check points to choose from, and yet only one is selected. And they're measuring the rider time by, let's see - oh never mind. Amazing how that works....

From the news I read there was no official clock at the top of that climb. Only hand-held stopwatches.

They interviewed the team and his problem was there before the stage start. He had an, injured, possibly torn quad.

According to his team:
Quote:
Thibaut suffers from a muscular lesion on his left thigh. Yesterday, he finished stage 18 with a sharp pain and had troubles walking in the evening. His condition didn't improve today, he just withdrew from the #TDF2019.

So the GPS units on the bikes are not really real time? It sure seems more sporting to award riders the location when the clock is stopped. If that’s reasonably possible.
