Post Campagnolo 11-speed shifter/derailleur compatibility chart

The question of interchangeability of Campy Ergolevers and derailleurs between model years for 11s seems to come up even in 2020, so I'd like to make a clear chart.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but cassette spacing has remained the same, so what really matters is cable-pull between group and model years.

For the Campy experts, does this charge look correct?

Chorus/Record/SR - the split is in 2015
Athena pre-2015 Chorus/Record/SR pre-2015, 2015+ works by itself
Potenza only works with itself
Centaur 11 only works with itself

To emphasize, this is only about mixing-and-matching 11-speed shifters and (rear) derailleurs. I will try to keep the below chart updated with all your feedback, thanks!

I've definitely used Chorus 11 shifters with Athena 11 derailleurs without any problems. (They both would have been pre 2014.)

Currently using 2011-14 Chorus shifters with 2011-14 Athena rear derailleur and Chorus derailleur. No problems 6,000 miles in.

For those willing to break the mold, campy 11 shifters work with any shimano 9 speed RD (classic rando setup back in the day). Works better than campy campy honestly. I rode 11 brifters with a 9speed MTB RD for years and never had a single issue, and never had to adjust silly barrels. Worth it if you want that 11-42 gearing in the rears.

I'm also running 2015 chorus RD with 2017 chorus brifters with no issues right now. Some say the new design of the new RD's only work with the new shifters but that's a myth fwiw.

Sorry, I don't understand the color-coding system. Is for example, a 2014 Chorus RD, compatible with a 2015 SR shifter?

I skipped 11spd, but I thought Athena shared cable pull with 2014 and earlier while Potenza shared cable pull with 2015+. In both cases, Campagnolo claims they are not compatible with chorus or above because they use a different strength return spring optimized for powershift levers. In practice, mixing doesn’t seem to cause issue.

I’ve got no idea where Centaur 11 falls, but it wouldn’t shock me if it matched potenza or Athena. Taking a look at the shifter parts book would probably tell more. The shifter assembly is probably a shared part.

Edit: centaur 11 does have a unique shifter assembly part number. Not a guarantee that it’s a unique cable pull, but it does leave doubt.

Thanks, updated pre-2015!

Sorry for the confusion -- limited set of crayons. Every shade/block denotes compatibility within that block.

Currently I'm running a pre 2015 chorus 11 RD with the newer chorus 11 shifters. Works fine for me.

I've run a 2016 set of shifters with a chorus 10 speed RD with no issues.

I've also run 2016 chorus shifters with a shimano XT shadow 9 speed RD, deore 9 speed RD, and a few more with excellent results.

Pre 2015 'stuff' works with 2015 and later 'stuff' just fine.
Shifters, ders.

If you have either of the ders on the right and left, you can use with any 2009 and later set of shifters, 10s or 11s..main body outside of end knuckles..with older ones(center), nyet.

'Some' have said Potenza rear der return spring isn't strong enough for non Potenza shifters..I haven't seen that. Since the lever is just 'releasing' the cable to go to a higher gear, not sure how the shifter influences that.

AND, older 10s shifters, like 2008 and older? Use a 'modern' 2009+ rear der, like Chorus, even 11s..works fine.

This seems contradictory(?). The center image is 2007-08 Centaur 10... which granted was the Escape mechanism years... are you saying that the older style Ergos work with the newer style RDs but not vice-versa? Could you please clarify what you were nyet-ing?

Older style ERGO? Which one. I am saying 11s ERGO levers work with either the left or right der, not the center-nyet. Older ERGO, like 10s 2008 and older, work with any of the pictured rear ders.

I don't get the nyet.

And the center derailer looks like 10s, why wouldn't it work with 10s levers?

This thread perhaps leaves me as confused as ever.

Recalling my experimental Allvit test using a 9s lever (big fail).
Recently got 600 SIS levers to shift a narrow-spaced 6s freewheel perfectly, had to make a special washer with two bent tabs so as to increase leverage (decrease actuation).

And did I read here that 11s levers will shift 11 cogs using a 9s Shimano derailer?
Did they mean nine cogs perhaps??? (and which rules out the mentioned 11-42t range).

So much confusion.

I have definitely seen that mixing pre- and post-2015 stuff produces bad shifting, and you can fix it with alternative cable routing if you have a newer derailleur. The cable pull is definitely different.

what I have seen as well. It definitely works but some people have more problems than others. I am building a campy bike right now and did not want to fuss with it so just got some pre 2014 shifters to go with the long cage athena.
