I've never seen that before. But if the freewheel can 'freewheel' how can it both
coast and also actuate the brake when needed? |

From that second link you posted it appears that it is not a conventional 3 speed freewheel but a three cog 'block' that fits onto the coasterbrake hub like the single cog hubs we normally associate with that style hub.
The Herse does not have the device within the chain guard to prevent the chain from slapping the stay like the example pictured in the link. Very interesting! |
