Coast Ride 2020

Didn't find anything in a search, so a new thread this way cometh...

This is coming up (sorta, late Jan. 2020)

Wondering if any PL'ers have done a previous iteration, and what their experience was. We're looking at coming from Houston to get some scenic riding done, and get a good start on building some early-season fitness.

Anyone planning on the 2020 version?

I’ve done it several times as has Drmojo. Have ridden self-contained and once with bags schlepped for me. Gorgeous route, particularly day 2. IME participants have ranged from super-friendly to outright elitist. Not sure what the group size is these days but you’ll be able to find company or not as you wish. Weather can be sunny and mild, cold, windy or wet. Pay attention to traffic on narrow hwy 1 cause they’ll be ogling the coastline, not looking out for you.

A really fun experience and as you said, a great way to get an early jump on fitness.

Coast Ride

A lot of folks in my neck of the woods like it.
To the best I can tell it is like a "race type" group ride rolled out to a longer point to point format.
So fast riding at the pointy end. Also seems to be a decent amount of attack and also crashing.

As mentioned, could be great weather in the 60's-70's. Could be rain and headwind the entire way.

Looks interesting. Is Highway 1 along Big Sur better or worse with a large group?

I've ridden down that stretch 2x. Smaller groups are better. My favorite section of the ride is Big Sur of course! Beautiful.

I have done that road many times on motorcycles and in cars. It's too narrow with very little shoulder for me to feel comfortable riding a bike there. The spectacular views make for MANY distracted drivers. To return to your original question a larger group would be harder for a driver to miss seeing you. OTOH how comfortable would you be riding in a paceline when there is little to no room to maneuver if a rider goes down?

I have been hit by cars when riding my bike 3 times and run over and badly injured once on my motorcycle even though I was wearing (mostly) proper armored clothing and a full-face helmet so I'm not nearly as brave as I once was. Lots of people have a different assessment of risk-reward than I am left with and the scenery is spectacular.

Last year day 2 of the Coast Ride was rainy, which may have been a blessing in disguise. Not much car traffic at all! I am used to riding 600k in a day and a half, so taking 3 days felt like total luxury.

Rent a car individually or by group, take the train, or fly. I've been doing the ride for many years.
