Mathieu Van Der Poel is coming...
And he did it again...1st place in the UCI short-track and in today’s XC race in Val di Sole!
Playback is available on red bull racing. He saved the best for last and crushed Shurter and Fluckinger on the first climb of the 6th lap. Amazing stuff! Didn’t even look that beat coming over the finish. Looking forward to the race in Lenzerheide next week! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- as an aside, there are apparently two Dutch speakers in this thread? Ruim (as in "Ruimteaapje") means space in Germanic languages, right? And there's just one too many "j" around to be German. Your sign-off line looks to be in Dutch as well (using "met" and "mijn" as opposed to "mit" and "mein")? |

The speed with which he puts 5, 10, 15 seconds on riders like Schurter, Flueckiger, Avancini is amazing, as are his (no surprise) handling skills on the wet short track course. As a bonus, you can watch the awesome 2-up sprint between Neff and Ferrand-Prevot in the women's XCO. |

Indeed dutch, lived all over the place, now back home. got hooked on this forum living on the east-coast when it was still the Serotta forum and before the schizm... ruimteaapje translates to “spacemonkey”, though the “je or tje” is a diminutive we use a lot...so really it would be “little (or perhaps the currently more common “lil’ “) spacemonkey”. My sign-off means exactly what you indicated, very similar to german indeed. Verzonden vanaf mijn iPhone met Tapatalk |

Impressive wins from VdP indeed!
What are his goals for the season? Worlds XC MTB? |

His long term goal is MTB Olympic gold next year. He's actually skipping MTB worlds and the last WC round in Snowshoe, WVa to focus on road worlds.
He's racing the mountain bike World Cup this coming weekend then a short stint on the road then cross. Last edited by dougefresh; 08-06-2019 at 02:23 PM. |

Plus, the MTB Worlds course at Mont Saint Anne is notoriously technical, and as good as MVDP is technically, he's probably not at the level of the top guys in the XC field. For example, Schurter was giving up about 5-10 seconds on the main climb every lap to MVDP (until the last one, when he gave up 20+ seconds) and pretty easily getting that back on the descent. He was also noticeably avoiding one big a-line rock drop that Nino and Flueckiger were hitting every time. MVDP wins at XC because he can drop massive power whenever he wants. |

Not to downplay MVDP's abilities, but this is pretty much his winning strategy across all disciplines right? The motor is, as they say, rather large.

Are you saying it's exceptional to drag 6 guys back to the 2 man break over 10k, then outsprint everyone to win the Amstel Gold? Yeah, the motor is large. In contrast with XC though, I think he might be one of the best if not the best bike handler at the front of the CX field. He takes crazy risks that no one else does and pulls them out by virtue of superior reactions. Remember in the 2017 and 2018 CX world champs when he would have a crash or weird mechanical and then mentally bury himself? That weakness seems to be gone too. |
