Saw a guy ride past me at a stoplight at a major intersection talking on his cell and casually look to his right for traffic when he reached the middle of the intersection. And yes, cars were coming through the intersection...fortunately no collision...

But I have seen worse: fellow riding down the middle of the car lane (50 mph posted speed limit) when to his immediate right the state of California had built for him a beautiful 12 foot wide bike lane. When I caught up to him at the next light I asked why he wasn’t using the bike lane. His response: it’s much safer to ride in the lane of traffic as it forces cars to slow down and go around him... yikes.

Develop your cycling skills by talking and texting while riding rollers.....and no helmet!

I saw a woman rollerblading while carrying her dog and talking on the phone while cruising down the bike path. I don't even know how she did it because the dog was a decent sized doodle and she wasn't using hands-free for the phone.

We all have different ideas of acceptable risks. Some people might argue that riding a bicycle on a road with cars is "an irresponsible practice looking for a collision". Riding while on the phone is certainly less safe then just regular riding, I am willing to risk it.

You maybe willing to risk it, however just like the selfish drivers using the roadways, the people or property you run into won't necessarily appreciate your risk taking.

Common sense laws are made a necessity by selfish individuals who can't/won't adapt to conventional knowledge.

Many things are distracting while riding, I crashed once when I was getting a drink from my water bottle, should I stop every time I want a drink? I guess they should make a common sense law for that? 2 hands on the handlebar at all times or your going to jail!!

Sometimes I ride one handed, sometimes I even ride with no hands!!!!! I guess that should be made illegal?

When I ride with friends I talk to them and I am sure that takes away from my absolute concentration on the road. What do you think about that? Let me guess, illegal!!!!!

Yes, this is basically my point of view.

I have ridden in the city for 8 hours per day for 20 years while on the Phone with no incidents. I guess i find the risk vs reward ratio acceptable. Its not illegal here either but its not like that would stop me tbh.

I do this sometimes if my headphones are in and I get a call. No big deal.

I guess y'all will tell me riding with headphones is dangerous, too.

I've crashed so many times but my podcast/music/phone call hasnt been the cause.

Is that a city of Austin rule or state-wide? Seriously. I know about the driving rule, but had not heard of it applying to riding. I live about 90 minutes north of you, so that's why I ask. Thought maybe just just a local reg, or I am missing something.
