I saw something new today

You've probably seen it before, and maybe I have as well and just forgot.

I passed a woman who was cycling. While talking on her cell phone.

Hopefully she won't hit a car and kill the driver.

I was in a midweek race once where a guy reached into his jersey pocket and answered his phone. Granted we were in small group that got dropped behind but still.

When I lived in Holland some 19 years ago the Dutch would talk and text while riding all the time.

There are probably far more cyclists talking on cell phones that you may have noticed at first glance, because they are using hands-free headsets. I see this quite often.

NBD, I've been thrilled to take a work call or two while riding for the sole purpose of annoying a coworker that they're at their desk while I'm out riding.

Only done this on rural straightaways – not busy streets – so I'd put the difficulty level around that of using a bidon while pedaling.

Hands-free on the bike is the same as hands-free in the car; it still removes your attention from the road.

Our rationale that we "only do it on rural straightaways, not busy streets" apparently means we can predict that nothing is going to happen during that time that will require our attention. And it becomes a slippery slope down from that rural road to suburban streets to quiet urban streets to stop and go traffic and so on.

I always mention this book whenever this subject comes up; read Matt Richtel's book, A Deadly Wandering and maybe you'll begin to understand hands-free or not; it ain't safe for you or for others, whether in a dropped group in a race, on a rural straightaway, or in traffic.

Everybody should read this book. If you think you are not being distracted while talking hands free, you are wrong. Feel free to continue doing it but you are not as focused as you could otherwise be!

That moment when you realize what you thought was an innocuous post about cycling is actually someone’s Honeypot of Judgement. My bad.

He may not, however I do, it's an irresponsible practice looking for a collision.
