Advice : Upgrading long reach to a 105
Hi,
Need some advise here . I am trying to upgrade brakes on my 2016 Synapse with promax rc459 long reach calipers to a 105(7000). However after having ordered i am trying to figure out if they will fit . i noticed in the specs that r7000 has a reach of 51 mm. Since the promax is long reach(47-64 mm) will these brakes fit or how do I determine what would fit. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

It's all about where the pads are in the arms. If they are towards the top then you should be fine.
Most of the higher spec synapse from later years came with 6800 or similar calipers so they may be at the bottom of the arms but should still work. You might have to pick up some offset pad holders from BDop cycling and you will be fine if you don't have enough reach. https://bdopcycling.com/brake-pads-and-holders/ |

I guess you already bought the group with short reach brakes?
If you want to upgrade the brakes then I would look for some TRP RG957 calipers (47-57mm reach). |

have a 2012 Synapse and went to upgrade the brakes and figured out the hard way that 105s were too short. Not sure about the 2016 tho. Shimano does make a non-series specific long-reach brake, I think the part number is BR-R650 and they're Ultegra level...as denoted by the '6' in the part number.

Don't know what you feel is lacking in the current calipers. The TRP are arguably the nicest mid reach caliper out there, but the Tektro R539 is a very good dual pivot caliper with the same quick release feature of the TRP (Tektro Racing Products) model and they are much less expensive.

I have Tektro 737 mid reach brakes on one of my bikes with KoolStop salmon pads. They work great.

ok, here's a pic...They're the BR-R600. It says on Max 57 Min 47..I replaced the stock Tektro 539s as they felt flexxy to me. I can't really tell the difference b/t these and the standard reach I have on other bikes. Good action with no flexxy/squishy. I think I got mine used from another PLer.
