Grasshopper Series - Old Caz 1/31

Is anyone here riding this one, by chance?
It will be my first organized mixed surface ride.
Any training tips from those who have ridden it before would be greatly appreciated.

Henry

Grasshopper

Ride a cross bike or 29'er.
Likely want a 38mm tire for the cross bike and low gears- 34/32 low or similar.
If it does not dry up significantly between now and then it will be a muddy mess (but some people like that).

Thanks John H.
I will be riding my old Poprad on Clement Xplor USH 700x35. I have ridden them in some fairly substantial mud and fared well. 1x9 38t/11-32. Training on mixed terrain with some longer pavement rides for endurance. I hope it will be enough to get me to the end before they close the finish line.

Grasshopper

You will make it for sure. Just likely be over-geared in some spots.
It is only 50 miles- It wont be as brutal as some Grasshoppers.

I am planning to do this one. I usually ride 28 road tires but I put on 33 trigger pros today. I could barely stay on the trail in some spots. If it doesn't dry it'll be a gnarly.

Setup

The 700x35 will be fine if the weather holds- heck, even a 32-33.
The gearing will be a compromise in spots for sure.
But no way around that with a 1x-

john h: what pitch do you speak of that presents a problem for a "1 x?"

1x

You are not the OP so it is hard for me to say without knowing what your specific 1x gearing is.
But the pitch where you turn right onto Duncan rd. comes to mind, also there are many pitches on the climbs leading to the Cazadero descent where it would be nice to have a low gear.
Also, there is a steep pitch on Willow Creek that many have a hard time with (it is within a mile or two of the finish though).
I would not say that most of these pitches are not so steep that you can't get up them. More like you will have to ride a low cadence- possibly for a longer time than you desire.

1x

As John mentioned the start of Duncan Rd is steep and sudden, albeit short. For me there's also the climb out of the river crossing, more traction limited than ultra-steep. These are the two spots that always catch me out with my 34-29. On the other side of the coin there's plenty of flat pavement begging for a big ring.

Thanks for this great input. I'm just not sure what to expect, so any info is helpful. Survival will pretty much be my main goal for the day. I'm a methodical climber as a rule, so that is less of a worry to me than letting the adrenaline get the best of me is.
I'll be on my old white w/green Poprad. Hope to meet some of you that day.

Henry
