Well, fenders for sure, I'd suggest wearing wool if you have it. Traction is tough. I have studded tires, anything else is asking for trouble. According to the temps you may have your drivetrain freeze up and be stuck with one fear. Be careful not to exhale upwards into your glasses. They can ice over instantly and leave you blind. Oh and it it's cold enough you may blink and have you eyelids freeze shut, not fun either, LOL!

Finally the best advice is......get rollers. After years and years of winter riding I just bought my first set.

Seriously though, winter is all about preparation, the right clothes and the right equipment. I still do 20+ daily miles in the winter but a lot of things go wrong and you need to be ready for them.

Oh, and have fun!

This is not really a heavy snowstorm for anywhere except Richmond... it's still probably enough to shut everything down for a bit but not even really sticking to the roads out north and west of the city. Very cool to drive around and see everything covered in snow, especially without the dirty snow on the roadsides. Maybe if we're lucky we'll have a snow day on Monday anyway

Being a person who is still recovering from a broken leg from a bike accident.....can't imagine taking that much risk.

Yeah, that was my conclusion today. I love road riding in new fresh snowfall when it's all light and flaky and serene. Unfortunately by the time I got outside today it had been snowing for over 6 hours and there was nothing light/flaky/serene about it at all; more like heavy/wet/chaotic. On my 23c road tires it felt just the tiniest bit out of control all the time.

I managed to get in a whole 3.5 miles before i said "Screw this" and went inside.

I've never thought of bikes in the terms of gravel, road or cx but in terms of snow.... fat bikes make the most sense to me.

I've had some pretty bad crashes on icy or snowy roads, and am much more wary now about going out in these conditions.

A few years ago, I was commuting home in NYC on a snowy day. The snow was very dense, my front wheel slid to one side, and I went down. I'd have been all right, except that a car plowed into me from behind. I was fortunate to get up with nothing worse than a cracked rib.

Nice snot-cicle.

Rollers outdoors in the garage today.

23℉ ambient temp and 10-20 mph wind out of the north... I passed on riding the roads... although by February it might be a go.

I spent 10 minutes on my first ever rollers today getting used to them. Was going to do a proper ride but my son came over. Tomorrow I'll get on there for a nice long ride. I think I'm going to choose the hall and a TV over the garage though.

Eliminates the 'sweat all over the bike' problem.

At least mostly...
