Never-ending upgrade
Why is it I can never just be happy with what I have? I have posted before on the N+1...but for the 1...I feel like there is a constant need to upgrade.
In 1 year for my primary bike (I only have 2)...I went from Sram Red to Ultegra Di2 to etap all when sram red was perfectly fine. I am not faster, I don't enjoy it that much more. Anyone else like this?

Used too.
After a while (and many $$$$) you know what you like and what works so you stick with it. Bicycle geo, frame that rides just so, not too fat road tires, saddle, assos bibs, sidi shoes, campy, campy wheels, hbar/stem with just right stiffness, etc., etc. PS, SRAM Red was never perfectly fine. |

I always like having a project, or I get bored. So I will sell something, or buy something or upgrade something or tinker with something. This stuff is a hobby so it will be never ending but I am ok with it.

Even the most modest cycling equipment is much, much better than I am.

some people are just into riding bikes and dont care at all about the bike itself. some of us know the bike to be what it is, a magnificent machine capable of wonders, and we love the machines themselves, and need to try different machines to get to know their personalities too.
i like riding bikes a lot, but at the end of the day, i really really like the bicycle too! |

I'm one of those folks who has become "just into riding bikes", which makes it sound like a very minimalized segment of cycling. There is no magic in the bike but what you interject when riding it. Last edited by berserk87; 06-20-2019 at 10:58 AM. |

I have a pretty intense interest in the equipment, but I also have come to the conclusion that the development of the road bicycle reached its peak about 2005 give or take a few years. Since then most of the developments have been driven by the necessity for new far more than the interest in better. Along the way there have been huge losses in the areas of aesthetics, and serviceability....and to some extent durability.

Modern components have worked great since Shimano introduced Hyperglide cassettes, pinned and ramped chainrings, and v brakes. I enjoy reading or hearing about other peoples adventures and seeing the pictures of the areas they explore but am not interested in the bicycles and components they used. |

Certainly SOME of the upgrading is done to engender positive comments at the coffee shop.

More time riding, less time upgrading. Eventually I'll get bored, sell something and start all over again. Over time I have noticed a pattern of where I eventually end up on all bikes. Now I just skip right to that step and build it that way the first time around. Less trips to the shop and more time riding. |
