Off topic but on topic. It's just not cyclists who are endangered by irresponsible motorists who drive recklessly and kill people.

It seems being a dangerous idiot behind the wheel who causes bodily harm is just not considered a crime. Add to this that prosecutors do not want to prosecute the wealthy, and well here we are.....
That closing paragraph is also chilling
'Lawyers for the Khuri family and the Munoz family have worked out a financial settlement in order to allow the families to heal, and they are in the process of finalizing those details. They ask for privacy during this sad and traumatic time.

How convenient..wonder how much that MD's 'diagnosis' cost the very wealthy family.

Judicial discretion is a big part. Decision processes with human involvement tend to be marked by high levels of noise, and sentencing has been shown to be particularly noisy, varying wildly between judges for similar and even identical cases. Narrower and stricter guidelines, and even automating part of the process- would address this. Of course, narrower guidelines- automated or not- will trade variance for bias. But if bias in sentencing is also a thing, and I'm pretty sure there is evidence of that, it would still be possible to wind up with less of that too.

I'm guessing this will be stalled seemingly forever, a common strategy in the hopes that people will forget. In about a year or so, the kid will get a slap on the wrist.

I hope I'm wrong.

I'm guessing no threat of prison time will change anything. Penalties are already on the books and most people just assume the odds of causing such an accident are small enough to continue as normal.

If nothing else, it probably makes you seem more relatable. Sadly.

Prison time(actually Juvie) for this kid won't fix anything.."young, dumb and full of ___"..He has been and will continue to be 'entitled', enabled by his parents..This won't be the last time he does something stupid and malicious. Hopefully next time, like this one, nobody will die.

For right below, it has worked before..in(wait for it...) TexAs for some kid that got drunk and killed 4 when he crashed, Ethan Couch....

Long before Ethan Couch and his family became notorious for using the “affluenza” defense, they had multiple run-ins with the law, often flouting authority or relying on personal wealth to get out of trouble. The incidents, totaling at least 20, ranged from speeding tickets and financial disputes to reckless driving and assault, a review of police and court records shows

Sounds familiar..

What do you bet he claims affluenza in his defense?

So freaking pissed. The driver got off with a year probation and 6mths suspended license. Left the cyclist for dead and she walked.
