11 speed chain, 9 speed cassette

Will it work? I’m guessing it will but I was wondering if anyone here has tried.

9 thru 11 speed cogs are the same thickness. The difference is the spacing between them.

Depends. Modern shifting systems that don’t ‘overshift’, then center(like shimano) depend on a certain chain width so it’ll be ‘grabbed’ by the next cog ‘up’, when shifting to a lower gear. If the chain is too narrow, on a system that may be worn some, the cog may not ‘grab’ the chain.

Besides, 9s chains generally cheaper than 11s…

Probably not. They ‘May’ shift but they will be noisy.

10s Dura-Ace chains go for almost $100 each on Ebay these days.

Both of the comments from oldpotato, regarding narrower and wider chains, reflect my experiences exactly.

I was asking because I impulse bought a 9 speed bike and all I had was an 11 speed chain. For now I’m using the 9 speed chain because it passed the wear gauge but at the time I assumed it wouldn’t have lol.
