Glad your memory is still intact for sure.
Remember those and the speed dream wheels with the spoke that kept pulling thru the rim. Plus your attic with all the bikes hanging!

I don't recall having an issue with the speed dreams. Unless that was Nate. He got them from me soon after I got them and I decided I was pushing it too much with them. And I needed the money for the 404s.

Tejay van Garderen

Here is a fun pic I came across the other day. New bike day for Tejay. My guess is around 2002.

He grew up here in Bozeman and we sponsored him until he moved to Colorado. He also worked for us as our "shop boy" to make a little extra money. He was a really good kid and he took his responsibility as a sponsored rider very seriously. He was far more professional than most, if not all the adult riders we sponsored over the years.

He still sends us jerseys from time to time.

A couple Summers ago he ordered a bike from us. He had plenty of bikes but they were all sponsor provided and he wanted a bike that was his own.

Thanks Carl. Hope to be in touch in the future about a potential new build when the Corona pandemic recovers.

I like the direction builders have taken with partially painted TI
Very nice & reminds me of the old style Columbus SL frames with chrome rear
triangles or stays

thats a really cool story about Tejay.had no idea he was a Bozeman local.
that new Ti you built for him is certainly better looking than any bike i've seen him on as a sponsored rider.

kind of curious if his contracts require to him ride his supplied brand outside of races?

I don't know what his contract/s say, but from what I gather, he is free to ride what he wants on his own time. That said, it would be frowned upon if he were to promote other brands. So he doesn't post pictures of other brands on his social media channels or do anything else that would be seen as promotion.

Van Garderen also talks about the people who helped get him to where he is today, including a framebuilder in Bozeman, Montana: Carl Strong. “Without him I wouldn't have been a bike racer,” van Garderen said. “I just I wouldn't been wouldn't have been able to afford it.”
