Am I going to die?

Vittoria seems Extremely Serious about this “no hookless rims” thing. Am I going to die?

If you do, you'll have no one else to blame but yourself for using tires that aren't approved for hookless rims. Not a chance I'd take while using the bleeding edge of technology, but a couple bucks cheaper is a couple bucks cheaper, right?

Indeed, my life is worth exactly 3 dollars, and less with inflation every day!

38 psi though… doesn’t really seem like the bleeding edge of technology here. Dunno. Could be wrong!

As Keynes said, in the long run, we’re all dead.

If you live life worrying about death, aren't you already dead?

Well if you do, they'll be able to roll out the old trope, "He died doing what he loved doing."

Probably - but you' won't be figuratively dead, you'll likely be actually dead. You can live a full life while still worrying about death - as long as that worry motivates you take precautions to minimize the risk of death while doing dangerous things.

I'm just going to throw some numbers down. These are all based on my intuition, and not any formal analysis, but I would say 5% chance over the life of these tires you have an incident, and conditional on an incident happening, less than a 1% chance that it's fatal.

The faith I put in the engineered approved tubeless tire/hookless rim combination is the only thing that assuages my concerns regarding such a new (and some on the Paceline would say dangerous and unnecessary) technology for bicycles. But if you gotta ride that exact, specific tire for whatever reason have at it.

Mr Reek, would you say that you think tubeless bicycle tires (first sold by Hutchinson in 1999 for mountain bikes) are dangerous and unnecessary? Are you saying I’m gonna die without tubes no matter what?

Yes, you are going to die. I cannot speculate on the reason.

One other data point - according to an industry friend who has spoken with the Vittoria product manager, the molds are just old, and recent Vittoria gravel tires have tested successfully to spec with hookless rims. Newer molds for newer sizes don’t include the warning. Amusingly, Cervelo sells bikes with hookless rims which include a Vittoria tires with the warning on them - the Cervelo product managers are also OK with this.

Also 38psi is an absurd amount of pressure for a tire this big so don't worry about it. A lot of pearl clutching around here from people who insist on running their tires with way too much air.
