An alternative to bibs? Cafe du Cycliste’s “Albane.”

These look really interesting. I’m not the biggest fan of bibs in general, so these might make for a suitable replacement.

So these are just regular non-bib shorts? Is there any innovation here?

I’ve never tried them, so I can’t vouch for their effectiveness. From the CdC site:

“These durable cycling shorts use a super-strength double waist elastic to hold them in place, without the need for a restrictive bib section. The chamois pad on the shorts is made by specialists Elastic Interface, for all-day protection and breathability where it counts.”

Thanks for the heads up on these XX. Excellent shorts that are not bibs serve a role in the kit for many riders.

They are just plain old cycling shorts!
This is news? I don't have much use for bibs...

Can't stand bibs myself; I'm a shorts-only rider. Never had an issue with them staying in place.

Not sure I get the analogy, but to each their own.

The reasons I don’t like bibs are myriad. Just a few:

1) They’re called “bibs.” It’s what wrestlers wear. And babies.

2) The “fumbling for my junk” dance when I want to take a piss.

3) They chafe my nipple during longer rides.

4) They look a little silly. Especially under lighter colored jerseys.

For 1 - wrestlers call them singlets, not bibs, and rowers who wear basically the same thing call them uni's or "all-in-one's" for the British or Aussie folks, have never heard it called a bib, thats a cyclist thing.

Second, these are just new shorts. Assos has made some nice ones for years, but no matter what they will not sit and stay the same as bibs do with the shoulder support in the riding section. I have a pair for trainer rides and they pale in comparison to the equivalent bibs. Looking at these CdC they look like a worse copy of the Assos design with the double material waste, and honestly CdC stuff isn't supper innovative or especially great on the bottoms. Definitely nice looking, but I wouldn't think these to be anything special based on my experiences with CdC and shorts.

I stand corrected. Actually, most things sound better in the argot of the British Empire. For example “I’m chuffed with my new singlets.”

Edit: Also, I have a couple pairs of CDC bibs. I like them. Really comfortable. And many pairs of jerseys. CDC is my favorite cycling apparel company, so I’ll definitely be giving these a try and report back.

I like using chamois shorts for my indoor rides, as they are much easier for me to use in multi-activity workouts, like if I'm doing a little riding, some abs, and an upper body workout all in one evening.

But on the actual outdoor bike, I can't imagine biking without bibs. So much more comfortable, stays put, allows increased flexibility, and no elastic digging into my abdomen. If I've neglected to do laundry for long enough that I don't have clean bibs and have to wear shorts while biking outdoors, I really do suffer!

Those of us who began riding before bibs existed and wore shorts with chamois (!) pads pulled up by rainbow-colored suspenders remember those days un-fondly. I guess you have to make your own mistakes in order to learn...
