A friend of mine and DJG's was on that ride. He's OK physically, but pretty rattled.

Keep us informed of the incident as facts emerge, if you can.

Near miss
Just talked to a buddy who skipped the ride this am. Said the car hit the "b" group and the "a" group was 30 +/- seconds ahead.
4 lane road with a big shoulder, looks sadly intentional.

I live just on the other side of a the fence from a parkway. Here's an overhead Google view of the area.
Note the sharp U-turn exit from the parkway, and the triangular patch of grass. As you approach the exit, there are caution signs warning of the U-turn, and one advising a 10mph speed limit. At least a dozen times a year someone comes in "hot" for whatever reason you can imagine, fails to negotiate the U-turn, and plows over one of the three highway signs on that curve indicating the direction of travel. Since I enter the parkway there every day on my way to work I get to check out what they ran over. I judge their exit speed by which sign on the curve they clobbered! In fact, if you zoom in on the Google Map link above, you can see one of the flattened signs and tire tracks from a prior event! Most of the time the crash happens at night. I'll be asleep and wake up to expect to see a car overturned because of the horrendous metallic crunch. Sometimes the driver comes in so hot they drive completely over the island and into the culvert on the other side, in which case they aren't going anywhere, and a wrecker shows up with the state police. Most of the time the driver manages to stop on the grassy island while executing their power slide. They'll sit there for a few minutes while they clean out their underwear, then drive away. Well, on Saturday someone clocked the sign at 11:30AM, in BROAD DAYLIGHT! After some head scratching, he drove away. Distracting driving/under the influence; it's bad out there. Here's the photo from my bedroom.

I dont even need to hear any more facts. Here are the applicable facts:
-A driver is responsible to maintain control for his/her vehicle at all times -Hitting a group of cyclists, killing two and injuring 11 on a bright sunny day means the driver was not in control of the vehicle. Throw the book at him and never let him behind the wheel of a vehicle again IMO. I dont give a damn what his story is.

Just arrived in Tucson yesterday. First thing my dad said when he picked me up at the airport was how bad all the drivers are out here.

I do quite a bit of riding in the PHX and Tucson areas. In both places, you see many clearly marked bike lanes including marked lanes heading into intersections. What I notice when driving is how many drivers drift back and forth into the bike lanes; some even drive the entire length of a road with their right side wheels in the bike lane. It makes me wonder if they even realize what they're doing.
Stopping at the scene doesn't absolve anyone of responsibility. Hitting a group of cyclists is either the result of inattention or intention. Either one should have severe penalties. |
