sad news. met he and Phil at the AToC years ago. really gracious.

who would have thought him first before the other?
there is a lesson in that for all of us.

RIP Paul Sherwen Phil and Paul's enthusiasm during the early 90s definitely made an impression on me and helped get me into the sport.

So sad. 62 years young. Too early.

It was easy and enjoyable to listen to him. Besides his race commentary I always enjoyed his history lessons he would throw in about a particular church, town or other unique feature the peloton was passing. It must have taken a lot of advance work just to have those 20 seconds all prepped to go. Yet they were so seamlessly inserted into the action. No other announcer in any sport I know would bother for such a small detail in their broadcast (other than for an Olympics) but he did. RIP.

Oh boy, that is heartbreaking. I’ve always been a fan. Part of the soundtrack of summer.

My son getting autographs at the 2011 TdF. Very nice chat with both of them.

Really Going to Miss His Commentary...

at the tour. I have always been amazed at how many negative reviews I have read regarding their commentary 'style' at the tour! I found Paul's added color about the geography, the culture, and the history of France to sugnificantly enhance the broadcast. I was never sure what people wanted instead?? Six hours a day about chain lube preferences, gear selection, tire pressure...I have travelled to Paris for work, but will never likely see 99% of the countryside the tour travels through and will really miss the rich, historical commentary of My Sherwen!!!

I saw this on cyclingtips yesterday and my heart sank. Without question he and Phil were THE voices of cycling as far as I am concerned.

My favorite cycling commercial is giro commercial with the little boy riding his bike hearing their voices calling a race . . . something I've done as an old man many, many times.

I got bored of P&P's repeated and repeated and repeated and oversimplified explanations of really basic stuff. But, that's my problem - he always said he was trying to be a commentator for the little old lady down the street who didn't know anything about cycling, not the very limited audience of cycling fans. So that was deliberate and a feature, not a bug, even though it was often boring to me.

But ironically, I'll miss it intensely this year - you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone, to quote Joni. And I wonder how Phil will carry on without Paul - Paul has been carrying Phil on his back for years...

RIP Paul.

-Ray

Wow this sucks was the first thing that came to my mind. Phil and Paul have been the voices I've known since starting to watching cycling many years ago. He will be missed. I was just reading his posts and of course his philanthropic work to save the Rhinos (and other causes). You really never know when your time is going to be up....

Both Dario pal and Paul pal passed away at age 62 this year.

Both heart-related.

This one sucks. Big part of my childhood gone, again.
Happening too often these days.
Best to his family during this tough time.
