Riding Tasmania...what to expect

headed over to Tasmania first 2 weeks of Feb for a pretty epic bikepacking trip.
anybody here from Tasmania, or have been there and can give me tips?
mostly about weather and what to bring along etc
it s gonna be though and dirty, which is ok (done that before) but I dont feel like I know much about the wildlife out there (snakes!!!!)

Tassie is beautiful but can be very hilly and there's hardly a straight stretch of road anywhere. The west more so than the east. We visited last November and on a day that it was 40 degrees back in Perth we were driving in rain with patches of snow by the side of the road. The west tends to be wetter and colder than the east. On our travels we saw plenty of people cycle touring.

The weather in early Feb should be nice and reasonably warm but expect anything from cold to scorching heat. Wildlife is unlikely to be problem. Judging by the amount of roadkill we saw the wildlife face more dangers from humans than you will from them.

The food is great and vegetarians and vegans are well catered for. If you want some more info or recommendations feel free to PM me.

Mate, I am from Tassi. You are in for a cycling treat! Do you have a route picked out? Depending on where in the state you are planning to ride you really want to be prepared for a wide range of weather conditions. There are so many great roads and places to check out! Are you coming with a group or solo?? Tell us more!

A little snooping and I found out you can search members by location.
I saw 3 members with "Tasmania" in their location.

Aren't they mostly suffering from facial tumors? Probably best not to stare.

yeah, gonna takle most of the Tassie Gift which is an incredible (and challenging) bikepackig 1000 miles off-road rute. Weapon of Choice is a Curve GXR (aka Kevin of Ti)
Gonna be self supported bike packing, and its just me and a mate
Original plan was the Hunt 1000 from Canberra to Melbourne, but all of that area has been devastated by the fires, so Tassie is a very inspiring backup plan. Im stoked!!

I spent a month riding in Tassie at the end of 1997. Some of the best roads I have ever been on.

Wow, this will be epic! I know some of these areas and roads quite well. There is plenty of rugged remote terrain with serious climbing. Much of this route will have no phone reception so from a safety aspect consider either a Sat phone or EPERB, or have known checkpoints that a friend should know to hear from you by a certain time. Make sure you take lots of pics and share them here! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Spent two weeks being driven around Tasmania by expat friends in 2013. Basically drove the perimeter of the country with excursions into the center.

It's beautiful, rural, rugged, many more sheep than people. Lot's of bikers on Mt. Wellington over near Hobart.

Only caution: the roads are narrow and have correspondingly narrow (or no) shoulders. Traffic is not heavy but will be moving fast. Pick your routes carefully.

Don't worry about the wildlife they will avoid you. In some of the forested areas leeches can be a p.i.t.a.

February there is like August in the states. That said, in some of the higher altitudes in the interior I suspect it can get chilly. As another poster said, phone coverage and Internet coverage is spotty at best.

A pretty detailed travelogue at:

and photo album at:
