+2 on avoiding KDSS. Not that it's any more unreliable than other air suspensions, as azrider said: just another thing to break.
I find this to be the most accurate and unbiased review of the GX. Other Youtube reviewers (mainly Millennials) lambast that lack of tech and miss the reason for this vehicle's existence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaCO3EC1fSU |

It's a great system. 200 series has KDSS as well.
With all due respect, the reliability on the GX is stellar. They are mechanically simple, and designed to be easily worked on. I don't know why you would say the GX is maintenance heavy. I'm very familiar with them and I've never heard that. I've had no issue with Lexus parts prices being more expensive than Toyota. Usually, they are comparable if there is a Toyota equivalent. If you're modding, lifting than yes, kdss and airbags will limit you somewhat but as a stock to lightly modded form, I would highly recommend kdss. KDSS is brilliantly simple. cv boots leak when the truck is lifted because of the angle and increased articulation out of oem range. Any issues are minor and compared to any other comparable suv, I would consider the GX trouble-free. Honestly, just get the best GX in your budget. They are all the same as far as the core mechanicals- meaning that they are all solid reliable, designed to be high mileage, durable ladder frame suv's. Quote:

I owned a Lexus is300 SportX and I ran into the price fluctuation of Toyo/Lex parts. Cool to hear it's not applicable for these. My comments about KDSS are from the heavy research I did prior to buying my 4x truck, and from previous owners who've since switched platforms. |

Your GX has kdss as standard equipment, correct?

What a nostalgic thread. The first vehicle I ever owned was a ‘72 FJ40. Bought it for $3,200 in 1992 and drove it for 4 years all over southern British Columbia. Doors and hardtop came off in April and went back on in October. I put on new tires (31s salvaged from a wrecked 4Runner) and welded a steel plate to the rusted driver’s side floorboard to keep the seat from falling through. Sold it (for $3,200) when I moved away to university in 1996. I’ve been half-heartedly looking for a replacement ever since.

Not that it matters, but are there aftermarket grill kits for the Lexus SUVs? As my handle indicates, I'm used to somewhat modular vehicles.

Not on the 1st Gen GX. It's actually somewhat rare and challenging to find. It isn't on our GX. I was originally looking for KDSS, but this one popped up in the right colors, with the right miles, and at the right price. My SO didn't care about KDSS, so we ended up with one that didn't have it.

I thought all GX460's after 2010+ had KDSS standard. I thought all LC200's as well.
Yeah it's not a dealbreaker by any means, but I really like it. I, personally, would seek it out if I were getting a GX. Quote:

Ours is the mid-level "Premium" trim that lacks KDSS. Got 12% off MSRP without too much of a fight and it was on the dealer's lot...bought the thing in 15 minutes.
