DT Swiss R-460 vs. Archetypes

The DT Swiss rims weight a little less, cost a little less, and have about the same specs.

Any comments on these two rims, pros and cons one vs the other? i own several sets of archetype wheels and have been happy with them, but looking toward a new set of wheels for some rough duty, gravel rides, etc.

these will be built 24/28, radial front 3x rear.

i weight 133# as of this morning's weigh in.

thoughts?

I have built both and I think quality wise they are very close with the wee nod going to the Archetypes. Welded seam for H+Son, non for DT, altho not a big deal. Both very flat and round when new, both made in Asia. BUT, apples and apples, $ that they cost me, about $15 different per rim.

I think the DT460 is far better than Mavic OpenSport, the Archetype better than the DT460, the DT440, the best of the bunch. Along with quality, ease of build, I rank the DT460 and Velocity A23 together, The Archetype a wee bit easier, to get round, true, consistent tension all around and the DT440, like just 'centering the hub'..

133 pounds, I hate you......

I concur 100% with OP.

I've ridden both; zero difference in ride quality, braking, or durability/true so far, with 11sp 32/32 wheels under my fat arse.

Points to the Archetypes for multiple finishes, esp the hard ano which is nice. With DT it's the Model T color palette. Both have built up equally well for me, and both are easier/quicker to build than the A23.

The finish/anodizing on the 460s is not QUITE up to the finish on the HED C2, but at, what, 1/3 the price and 300% the availability/ease of purchase, the DT wins hands-down.

Nick, I would have no hesitation riding them in those spoke counts at your size.

I just got a wheelset set built up with an Eno rear hub and Ultegra front. I went with the DT 460s because the wheels going on a SSCX bike and the rims are tubeless approved. I was happy to see that the rims have a center channel after a DT carbon rim I bought on a wheelset that is "tubeless ready" turned out not to have one, thus making it a terrible rim for tubeless use.

I'll report back once I have some tires mounted and km's logged.

Feedback?

Bringing this back from the dead!
I'm on the fence between the R460 and the H plus Sons. Even considering the Boyd Altamont Lites.

Anyone care to comment anymore than what's already been said?
Is the H plus Son worth 2x (in CAD) the worth of the R460s?

haha, man - i've built a lot of wheels since i started this thread.

what's the intended purpose for the wheels? how many spokes?

i think the Archetypes have a nicer brake track than the DT's - but now in 2020 there are other considerations and options available.

are you certain you do not want to run tubeless?

I have both and prefer the Archetype for braking and finish/appearance. If you're not going to run tubeless they are a great option.

Intend to use these mainly for road use and i'm a pretty light rider @ 155LBS.
I'd still like them to be fairly solid, as I plan on using these on longer rides and not really just a race wheelset.

20F/24R, thinking Radial AEROLITE/CX-Ray front - unsure about the rear... So if you have suggestions shoot ahead!

As for Tubeless i've read that the Archetypes can be setup without too much hassle, so that fits my needs plenty for now.

I know the Archetype gets a lot of love (no direct experience personally), but unless they are considerably less money than other options it makes good sense to me to choose an updated, tubeless compatible design if building up a new wheelset. You may have no intention of running a tubeless setup right now, but things can change.

Tubeless Archetypes is a bad news. Like if a shop was okay with the idea, I’d find another shop.

Yeah, converting a rim like this for low-PSI gravel/cross use is one thing, but hard, hard pass on road tubeless.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried the Astral (subsidiary of Rolf Prima) solstice or radiant rims? Smaller Oregon company and it seems like possibly machined in house (not sure...)

I know member Gothard uses the Astral Leviathan on his Spectrum disc tandem. I can't ever remember seeing any bike posted using the rim brake models.
