I rode from Macon to Augusta years ago on an overnight bike camping trip and it was pretty awesome! No huge climbs but a ton of great dirt and gravel roads in what seemed to me like the big bad deep south country. People are nice! Dogs like to chase, and look threatening, but were also nice! Narrative and photos here, starting about halfway down.

Just keep riding until you're out of town. And keep going. Don't look back. Macon is awful.

I cannot help with ride routes but I can suggest a restaurant . . . excellent brews and kickass burgers . . . The Rookery.

The Macon ChainGang is a local group. They have a pretty good group of guys.
They have a ride leaving from a local church. I can find out the name.
