Happy 100th birthday, Jimmy Carter
He was one of the best men who ever occupied the White House, and he has done a great deal of good since he left.
And he clearly likes bicycles.

I rode the century part of the annual “Plains, Trains and Bike Chains” ride this past Saturday. We had over 100 riders sign up (for all segments) and the century segment was added for the first time, all in honor of President Carter’s 100th bday today.
The annual “P, T & BC” ride is always in conjunction with the annual Plains Peanut Festival. We leave a park at Lake Blackshear GA and ride to Leslie GA, then Americus GA and then to Plains… and back. We get to Plains in time for the annual parade and we get peanut butter ice cream and other typical festival fare. It was a tough ride as we had 12-15 mph winds all the way back - and I was riding solo… but 14 of us finished the century. Happy 100th bday, President Carter! Folks should embrace Jimmy's selflessness. The world would be a better place.

I met him in 2008 in Bremerton, WA. I was a repair officer on a ship in overhaul so my guys weren't that busy. I arranged for my guys to do Habitat for Humanity one day a week. We ended up doing as many as three days a week because of my guy's skill sets and work ethic. My guys learned how to install laminate flooring, hang sheetrock, set tile, and install formica countertops. The local coordinator would call me asking for my guys to correct other volunteer's work. I had one guy, my nuclear welder, who had anger management issues, so I put him on the radial arm saw outside cutting laminate flooring. He had a coffee can and it would be half full of cigarette butts by the end of the day.
As the Lieutenant Commander, I spent my time outside picking up construction trash and taking it to the dumpster, and is when I saw an old man getting out of a black suburban. He was very personable and kind, and happy that the senior guy was picking up trash and staying out of the way. He came to Bremerton frequently because his submarine, the USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23) was stationed in the PNW. One of my best friends was the Command Master Chief on the JC and had the best stories of Carter's kindness. |

plus the Carter is a cool boat.. I was the CMC for the CG unit that escorted SSBNs in and out post 9/11 from 2018-2021.. occasionally, we'd escort a non-SSBN..

to me he really is a great example
being true to the best precepts of his faith, without any devaluing of others; making an honest effort to make things better while in office, and certainly a remarkable effort along those lines after public office; plus he demonstrated integrity and humility and owned his mistakes.
I'm glad he is still with us, and believe the nation he loves and served will continue to move toward being that better society of good citizens that he has long fostered through his own actions. |

He was a great president, I voted for him, and a good person too.
OT While Jimmy is not. What sucks about being the world’s oldest person is you don’t get to keep the title very long.

But, but, he was a politician.
Hows that deregulation of air travel working out?
