Agreed. The premium just isn't worth it.

I must say though that they really take good care of their stuff, so its more than likely to arrive in an immaculate condition

So I figured it out what's going on.

The ones listed on eBay are not from the original owners. These people are flippers. They literally take listings from Yahoo Auction Japan and repost them here while jacking up the prices. Once they are sold here, the flippers here will use the buy it now option in Yahoo Auction Japan to buy the items from the original owners and ship them to the buyers on eBay. Sometimes this doesn't work cuz items get sold before they notice, thus not having time to take the listings on eBay down before they get sold and the flippers are forced to cancel the orders on eBay. That's why you see some negative feedbacks like "the seller canceled my order for no reason" and blah blah blah.

These ****ers are literally capitalizing on the brand value of Japan. Listing a whole bunch of random stuff just to hope one will sell at a large profit. Quite dirty IMO.

people do the same on auction sites in Japan.
Sell an item that is on sale at Amazon with a lower buy it now price and high shipping. they then just get amazon to send it to the buyers address and pocket the difference after 10% auction fees are paid. easy money.

Arbitrage, and this is as old as capitalism.

One could argue the folks in the middle are providing a translation and marketing service.

Or bridging a gap in the supply chain.

I secured all pieces of the Ultegra 8100 group piecemeal in January from a variety of sellers from Japan, I think I ended up net below MSRP (US pricing) on everything. Either stuff is cheaper there and/or they were part of a bike shop and were able to secure wholesale pricing, either way, I'm not disappointed.

You can bid on Y! Japan auctions via zen market and take advantage of the weak Yen!

This is what I do for a whole host of items : ) just gotta factor in 20-40$ shipping, but its via DHL.

There's a muji bedframe they only sell in EU/Asia markets that is more beautiful, and even cheaper, with DHL shipping to the US, than their current offerings in the US market. haven't pulled the trigger on that one yet though.
