Currently running these 36Ts on my gravel wheels.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-DT-Swis....m46890.l49286

No complaints. Same weight and built quality (thickness, finish, tooth cut/depth) as the 18T they replaced. They are on an alternate set of wheels so im OK with the risk.

I have a genuine 54T set on my CX race wheels. Not taking any risk there.

Do these aftermarket parts violate intellectual property laws? That would be a showstopper for me.

what about these ones from Bontrager?

https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/e...4aAs-tEALw_wcB

Keith wouldn't put his name on bad stuff would he? Or are these proprietary for Trek?

DT Swiss definitely has the patent on hubs with star ratchets (https://patents.google.com/patent/US8757341B2/en), but I don't think their patents cover just the star ratchet itself.

That's A patent on star ratchets, but the original patent(s) on star ratchet hubs must be much older than that. DT got the star ratchet design from Hugi, which was using it at least since the 1990's, so the original patent(s) must be expired by now.

As far as the Bontrager star ratchet - the web page says they are replacement parts for Bontrager wheels with hubs based on the DT 240 platform. I'd guess these parts are most likely made by DT themselves. Or at the least made under license agreement with DT - maybe in the same off-shore factory that DT themselves use.

The good news is you can carry your old star ratchets around with you and when the cheap ebay ones strip, just swap them out.

Probably faster than fixing a flat if your endcap comes off.

re: Bontrager ratchets?

Any reason to think these would not fit my DT Swiss 350 hubs? I do believe the ratchets for at 240 and 350 the same.

Agreed. Been running a set of 36Ts from good ole Aliexpress and they have been fine on my MTB for the past 1,200km or so of trails.

Lighter even, since theyre hollowed out compared to the original DT 18T that came with my set of DT350s.

Greg
If they are from China, they don't care about no stinking intellectual property laws...
