What really is needed now that Air tags are out

What really is needed now that Air tags are out
Is decals that state, " This bicycle is protected with Apple Air tags"
And maybe a second sentence, "So if this bicycle is taken its location will be tracked"

But bike has no air tags

That's funny.

Our old house was completely rebuilt by the former owner, a big "security" guy.

All wired for a security system, we ended up paying ADT for the five years we were there.

the main benefit was the fact that if a smoke alarm went off, ADT immediately called the fire department. That seemed important, since, if the alarm went off and no one was there, the house would likely burn down, among other reasons.

Anyway, I will never forget the salesman stating plain as day that "the number one reason no one will break into your house is the $5 ADT sign out in front."

We took the signs with us when we moved.

This is true. I’ve worked in the security industry for longer than I care to admit. A front yard sign is your best deterrent.

Cameras are so cheap now, and some with no monthly fees, that a camera on the front porch is also a good idea.

I asked this question in another post a received zero responses, going too try again here. Apple AirTags are not going to work very well.

Anyone using Sherlock or similar GPS tracking antitheft device, not interested in Tile or the new Apple AirTags, they are way to dependent on location proximity.
https://www.sherlock.bike/en/?fbclid...9mOj36P3BNHqIQ Interested to hear about any real world experience.

Thanks

That Sherlock looks super interesting for bikes. One thing I noticed in reviews is that while the company promotes the battery charge lasting approximately one week in all their big ad copy, that battery life is with a minimum amount of GPS updates of the bike location.

If you set it up to record a GPS setting once every hour the battery lasts two days, and if you set the GPS update to 2 minutes (as I assume you would once discovering your bike is stolen) you're looking at 10 hours max with a full charge.

Decent Reddit review you've probably already seen – Reddit

All in all this appears to be one of the best solutions for bike tracking as long as you remember to keep it charged, don't mind using an app every time you lock up your bike, and are okay with potential false alarms.

Anyone building a disguised stem cap for Apple AirTags, likely being worked on somewhere? Do I despise bike thieves and bloodsucker insurance companies, you bet

Anyone buy one of the tags yet and used? If you have, where did you end up stashing it?

I know my 5S won't be compatible but I do wonder if you can log into iCloud to track.

Nomad Surface Mount

I just got my Nomad/Moment Surface Mounts in the mail.

https://nomadgoods.com/products/mome...tag-hard-shell

I pre-ordered them when I first ordered the AirTags for my bikes. I had been keeping the AirTags in my saddle bags for the past couple of months. The surface mounts are slick. I have the AirTags mounted to plastic portion of the bottom of my Fizik Kurve/Arione saddles. Each mount come with three sets of 2-sided adhesive so you can remove them and replace the AirTag batteries when necessary. I have the flat mounts, and they fit fine and securely attach to the bottom of the seat without issue.

Just got an AirTag and placed in in my Jeep. Works well and will get another for the bike. My only concern was that a thief would hear the anti-stalking 'chirp' from the speaker and would locate the AirTag on the bike, but the speaker is easily removed (a thief with an Apple device will still get a notification though when/if they are at home with the bike)

Dunno if it's ever been tested but I'm wondering if the signal will be compromised if put into a Ti frame.

I have it in my Jeep glovebox (aftermarket Tuffy Steel) and the signal is picked up

Most likely. Shane Miller from YouTube has done some testing and found that putting an AirTag in the stem did not work well.

Seems like the best performance was accomplished using inconspicuous external mounts.
