Haven't built it up yet - maybe over the weekend, though I'm waiting on cable stops.. Might just build it with the Shim ones I have and sub the Campy's when I get them.

Thats lots of room. Even for dirt and gravel. Noting big enough to cause serious harm is going to get past the brake and the centrifugal force of the wheel and wind up jamming in between the tire and down-tube. I have run tighter clearances over wet gravel etc and never had an issue. Remember that the area that is close to the tube is about an inch and a half long and a quarter inch wide. The tire and DT both curve away from each other. Put on some helicopter tape as was suggested and go ride it!

Great looking bike Clean. Would love to get my hands on a lugged Serotta. One of my favorite paint schemes. This one looks to be in great shape too. Nice score for sure!

Thanks for the perspective - the best outcome here is "run what you've got" so I'm happy

You can add a strip of helicopter tape to the seat tube for extra paint protection peace of mind.

No, the opposite is true - fatter rims will usually make the tire taller. Here's a diagram of 23mm and 25mm GP4000 tires on 19mm and 23/25mm rims, showing that the tire is taller on wider rims:

I experienced this first hand, when I switched from a 17mm wide rim to a 21mm wide rim. When I swapped the same 23mm tires to the wider rims, I found the tires no longer fit in the frame.

Oops, sorry, maybe I was reading the thread a little too fast. For tubulars, it wil depend somewhat on the shape of the tire bed, but I agree, wider tubular rims are apt to have a tire bed shape what will the tire to grow less tall.
