I don't think you can overestimate the impact that RAGBRAI has on road cycling in Iowa. Forty plus years seeing thousands of bike riders has to inform your bicycle world view at least somewhat.

this is interesting... ive lived here almost 38 years had ragbrai come through my home town multiple times... Ive never done even one leg of the ride ever. Its a very cool event to take in and watch.. and no matter where you stop for a coffee, beer, or snack your asked... "training for ragbrai?" my response is always "if I were training for ragbrai i'd be on a barstool". your right tho everyone knows about ragbrai. Ive noticed that the rural people either see me as a spectacle riding on the gravel roads or they resonate with me as being "rural" and we have a commonality at that point. almost everyone is very cordial when Im off the asphalt roads.
