Michelin Pro3 Race

Anyone had any issues with this tire? My wife blew out a practically new one today. The pic shows the bead completely shredded. These were bought on sale from Jenson's at the end of March. No issue with the rim or tube. Never seen a defect like this before. Good thing it happened on the flats . . .

I have not had that problem with PR3 but have had is 2 other times with other brands.

Don't remember the brands at the moment but they were defective from the get go.

I've probably been through at least 10 PR3's and never had a defect with any.

They wear fast, but never had an issue like that.

I'll be the odd man out. Michelin products do not come near my bike due to their utter and complete unreliability. I have held this view for some 3 years since a ProRace 3 tyre punctured with a large gash somewhere between my front door and the end of the street. The tyre was binned as unusable and it was not the first such event.

In hindsight I realised that in a home several blocks away a man was getting a bread knife out of his kitchen drawer, and it was undoubtedly this which caused the gash. The tyres are that bad. The man was unhurt.

No blowouts, but run of, shall we say, bad luck with PR3s. On my last five of them I got an average of four rides before they were unusable. And the last one happened to be on my bike when I slid out around a dry and gravel-free corner, yielding substantial road rash. Before this bad run, I had good luck with them -- enough good luck to have stocked up on 10 of them. I'm done now, in both senses.

I have PR3s in 4 of my bikes because I like the way they ride and you can get them cheap if you shop around. Mine last forever, maybe because I try to ride all my bikes so they get relatively little use, but I´ve had very good luck with them, no dramatic incidents and little trouble in the way of flats and punctures. The other tire I use regularly is the Conti Gatorskin and of course is tougher and lasts longer, but if you go online you´ll still find people complaining about durability and whatnot. I weight 185 but apparently I´m not hard on tires.

I have PR3's on one set of wheels. Think they ride and handle well.

They are race tires. Sticky rubber compound, short life, thin carcass, etc. Other tires better for regular riding IMHO.

I had a similar Michelin (different model) blow-out a few years ago. Switched to Vittorria, had problems with the center kelvar strip shifting, and now I'm using Continental 4000s which is the best I've used.

I've used PR3's . . .

. . . for the past 3 years on 3 different bikes and had no problems like this. Only down side I've seen is they ARE race tires, as Ralph says, and they don't last an eternity.

I have also not had nearly as many cutting problems with the PR3's ad with the Vittoria Open Corsas I was using before.

Looking at the photo--which is not large--can't see totally clearly. Is it possible the tire was not originally seated totally on the bead and eventually blew out?

Ditto my PR3 experience. Have used them for last few years when they've been on sale and no problems. 700x25s seem to wear longer than the 23s, which is weird.

You can find them still for about $30 at various places. Just picked up a few spare 25s.

Had a Hutchinson do the side blowout thingy during a GF in NC last June. Never again. (The tires, not the ride) It's scary. Like riding the old Conti GP3000s. You took your life into your hands on every downhill.

PR3's are all I've used for years.

No "blow out" issues. Decent wear. The only flats have been for pretty normal reasons - a staple, broken glass, a shard of metal.
