Current Shimano 105 with canti's or mini-V's?
Does anyone have experience running current-generation Shimano 105 R7000 levers with cantilevers or mini-V's? I'm specifically looking at the Tektro CR-720's and TRP CX8.4 or CX9.
I understand that Shimano has revised the cable pull over the last few generations, but I can't find anything indicating whether or not they're still compatible with typical short pull brakes. I'm helping with a Surly Cross-Check build for my father. Strong braking power with lower hand effort is the goal here. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

Mini Vs by a mile unless fender or mud clearances are a concern. The new SLR-EV standard works great with TRP 8.4s and would probably work if 9s if they're still available. Wide set cantis like 720s work great but often need more hand strength.

Yah.. can't comment on the latest 11 speed levers but I have 5700 105 on a bike and have run both the CR720s and the CX9s on that bike.
CX9 or 8.4 s by a mile. I am going to probably switch it to CX8.4s soon because it seems TRP has decided that the 8.4cm length is better and the 9s keep getting harder to find. Only negative there is fender clearance. With any of these it's super critical you get the brake arms aligned symmetrically when you start off or you'll be fiddling with the side to side adjustment as the pads wear. The CR720s are insanely fiddlly.. they have this narrow range where they're perfectly adjusted for brand new pads and they work.. as soon as the pads wear and anything changes and they fall out of the sweet spot the performance goes off a cliff and the bikes goes from "stops" to "just kind of slows down". The issue is you just turn the barrel adjuster as the pads wear the mechanical advantage changes and goes away.. so realistically to adjust them you have to readjust the pads to keep the yoke angle optimal as the pads wear. I don't think Shimano has changed the pull recently for brakes. The pull changed for brakes between 5600 -> 5700 and similar for Ultegra/DA. The pull change in more recent generations was the front derailleur pull. It changed from 5700 -> 5800 IIRC. Last edited by benb; 06-01-2020 at 10:16 AM. |

i am currently running 11 speed 105 levers with Paul MiniMotos Mini Vs and i am perfectly satisfied with both modulation and stopping power. No issues with level pull or rim clearance.

I am running R7000 shifters with Dia-compe 980 cantilevers and the braking is not super great. I like the shifting design and feel on the 105 units but I got better canti brake performance with the SRAM Rival shifters and Tektro CR720s I was previously using.

SLR-EV standard came about in the second gen 10sp stuff and hasn't changed since. 5700/6700 are the new EV standard.
