Keep an OPEN Min.D -- XL
Well, here's a shot at building an appropriate replacement for my dear and dearly departed Argonaut. I've had my eye on these for a while. The marketing got to me. Minimalist design, a focus on ride quality over speed, a climbing bike that can handle the rough roads of the west hills in Portland. Something you don't see everyday. Basically the Argonaut with disc brakes and room for wider tires (minus the beautiful carbon layup and pedigree). My day to day riding is a lot of steep climbing, broken pavement, tight corners, steep descents, and noodling between the fun stuff. This should be perfect for that. That's the hope anyway. Can I be satisfied with a production bike made overseas? Maybe. I'm OPEN to the possibility. And I'll see my way out..
Here's the build that's planned (to start): Groupset - Red AXS, 33/46 and 10-33. Wheelset - FFWD RAW DT180 Tires - Vittoria Corsa Evo G+ 30mm w Tubolitos Stem - Extralite -12x120 Bars - Thomson Road 40cm Tape - Fizik 2.5mm Tacky Headset - Cane Creek AER Saddle - Berk Lupina Cages - Arundel Mandibles Pedals - Time Xpro 12 And that's it - probably coming in under 7-kg, maybe. Build is coming along okay. Just need some thru-bolts for the brakes, then I can finish getting things connected, bled, and hopefully on the road by this weekend. Will it live up to the hype? Will the geo work? Or am I going to have to sell a kidney and get an Argo RM-3..? . . . Last edited by Clean39T; 12-11-2022 at 01:41 AM. |

I'm quite curious how this will compare to the Allied Alfa. Mentally, I've kind of placed OPEN and Allied in similar market spaces and competitors.

Looking forward to it.
Also, your DeSalvo is mean mugging your new build. Such a bully. ![]()

Dan, you should either do a blog, or book [remember those?]. Hopefully you make notes or have super good detailed memory.
I've know few riders that have as varied empirical gatherings of so many different weapons. And the best reviews you read mostly are not riders that spend as much time on each as you do. Usually loaned bikes, with quick changes etc for reviewing author/riders. Not the methodical tweaking we see you go thru. Sticky PL 39T blog? ![]()

![]() I do wish I'd taken better notes on some bikes I've owned. There are a lot of archives here - and not everything I've had has even had it's own post or made the year-end summary.. |

Oh man I'm stoked for you on this one!! I can't wait to hear the ride report. I'm extremely curious for your impressions. Have you ridden an Aethos? Would be a very interesting comparison, especially wrt to BB stiffness, which is the only area IMO the Aethos really lacks.
This is going to be a sweet build. The geo is really interesting on this bike. Lots of similarities to some old cervelo designs no surprise - the ST intercepts in front of the BB center, presumably to help cram a big tire into the very short stays. I'll be super interested in your fit and how you get it setup. The HT is a bit too tall for me and I would have thought you too, but that -12 will definitely help things. The AER is pretty low stack too so that should definitely help. I'm going to bet this one lasts much longer than everyone else is betting. =D |

Oh meant to ask - did you weigh the frame and mast before hanging stuff on it?
Also, I'd be very curious for a pic of the MOCT clamp thing they use to let you reset the seat mast length. I'm already psyching myself up to buy this frame from you if you sell it lol Last edited by geordanh; 10-04-2022 at 04:31 PM. |

I got inspired and started assembling last night before remembering I wanted to do one of those fastidious weight-weenie, measure everything type builds. Oh well. |

I hope you keep this one long enough to see both you and Pritchet7Four on the same brand, if not the same model.

Color me very interested in this new Opening. The M.ind had me with those skinny seatstays--and, I don't care how impractical ISPs are, they are pretty--especially this version. There was a M.ind XL frameset on the Phoenix CL that was tempting me recently--but it was 1x only--so I resisted.
So I'm now building a poor man's Open M.ind: a 2021 Cannondale Synapse Hi-Mod--they share very similar fit numbers. Your 900ish gram weight is astounding though. My 58cm Synapse hi-mod F/F/HS and axles is ~1600g. With your M.ind, you won't even need particularly light parts to make it really light. Synapse Stack & Reach: 610, 393 Open M.ind Stack & Reach: 610, 397 |

1195g for Synapse Hi Mod frame and rear thru axle--and, I still gotta add a seatpost!
By my calculations, once I add a light 200ish gram seatpost, your M.ind frame module is over 400g lighter. |
