This strikes a chord with me. Part of me hates to think about it that way, but it's realistic for me (in my mid-late 50's). I have some older bikes as well, but I have a number of bikes with Record 10 and I have not-and have no plans to- "upgrade" beyond that point.

Weird. I bet that would indicate something in the frame out of alignment, probably at least the derailleur hanger.

This would be a 1st. The lower limit screw would have had to have been too loose to allow the chain to drop. Fully tightened it usually would prevent the chain from even getting on the smallest cog. I think that they said that to cover up their mistake and incompetence.

?? Then cut the spring in half..AFTER checking to make sure the der hanger is straight..yeegads..
