Veterans Day - Never Forget

On this Veterans Day, I want to say to all the Paceline vets that we're with you and we will not forget your sacrifice so we could live our lives in peace.

One of those things we do is ride bikes, and it has helped thousands of veterans find their own peace.

Here is something I wrote on the subject for this weekend. I hope it makes you want to ride with a vet.

Thanks for writing this Mike. Sitting here in the warm sun early in the morning having coffee, far removed from ‘normal’ civilization, it’s very easy to forget why I’m able to do what I’m doing; enjoying my life.

Thank you for your service and sacrifices ladies and gentlemen.

Two pictures, the one with me in dress blues was around 2008, the one in whites was this past June. Same guy, same kid. My son is a Plebe at the Naval Academy and I'm retired and working a second career. It's my 33rd Veteran's Day, his first.

Yes, that's an inspiring read.

One story, the quadruple amputee riding a bike... and uses clip-ins...

Quote:
Being attached to the pedals proved a challenge, and he went through every cyclist’s rite of passage by falling while clipped in.
Bad enough when you've got two hands to try to break the fall.

Today used to be called Armistice Day. It still is in Europe. I think we should go back to calling it Armistice Day. A day we honor peace. A day we honor ending war. Because is there a greater way to honor soldiers than to give them peace? A day we think about how to lay down arms and live in peace. Armistice Day.

My dad spent 18 years in the Navy and my sister spent 20. My dad always said his favorite day in the Navy was VJ day, May 8, 1945. And his father died in 1918 in France. Armistice day didn't come quite soon enough. Interesting fact: My grandfather was a pilot in WW1. After pilots flew their first mission, their life expectancy was 21 days.

You all must be so proud of your President who was put off by a bit of rain to honor the 166,708 US service personel who died during WW1

I worked for the MoD, I would log on every morning to the Roll Call of Death on my laptop, seeing names of service personel I would drink with and work with who were killed in theatre the day before.

Classy move, guy

Let’s not inject current politics into this thread, please.

It’s not about that.

Uhhhh, ...because it's about what exactly?

The fatal misconception is that history and current events can be separated. If we're censored from talking about political issues, well and good, I don't mind that, but let's not delude ourselves that when we talk about something like remembering history, that it's "not about" politics. Nothing could be more central to politics.

We just aren't supposed to talk about it. Which is not at all the same.

I'll offer this suggestion to the community: Read Wilhelm II's rhetoric leading up to his invasion of Belgium, and George Bush II's rhetoric leading up to his invasion of Iraq. Comparing their rationalizations will allow you to decide whether pretending the present and the past are two different things is realistic.

Joxster, thank you for being willing to call a spade a spade. And Bruce, it would have been quite enough to respond, "You can't say that here".
