Summer socks...over ankle

What happened to socks since the last time I bought some? Everything is crew length now...***?? When did this happen? Who thought that was a good idea?

Anyone have any over ankle length socks sources they like?

rant over.....

The Pros are wearing higher socks, and everybody wants to look 'Pro', so that's what the sock companies are offering. Why are the Pros wearing higher socks? Because the fabric texture can improve aerodynamics over bare legs. The Pros were taking 'aero socks' to such extremes, that the UCI had create new rules regulating maximum sock height.

Darn Tough micro crew ultra-light bike socks. 53% nylon, 42% merino wool, 5% Lycra. Thin socks that breath and dry well. Shorter than crew, taller than ankle socks. Just right for me (Goldilocks). And an unconditional guarantee to boot!
Winner!

2nd the Darn Tough suggestion.

I bought my first pair about 8 years ago. On the package, it said lifetime guaranty. Even if they’re just worn out.

Past June, I finally retired them, as they had sizable holes on the soles. But just to see what would happen, I sent them back to DT.

Few days later, I had a coupon code for $16 on a new pair.

I was going to recommend Rapha merino ankle socks, but it appears they are no longer making them. They have been my go to for years and seem to never wear out. Bummer.
OTOH, you can,t go wrong with Darn Tough.

Check out sportful.

Not a huge fan of ankle socks, much prefer crews right now, but the last ones I got were from the copper triangle and I think they made them.

Better yet, check out roll massif website, they have several different styles available.

I had the opposite luck. Brevet and merino socks didn't hold up like the Pro Team

I really like sockguy socks. I got some really nice socks from bontrager on sale. Not sure I would pay 25 for them but at 6 I bought 3 pairs. I should have gotten more.

I think the history of tall socks predates anything about aerodynamics. As I recall, Lance Armstrong liked tall socks for some unknown reason and people decided that whatever Lance did was cool. Personally I don't want to look anything like Lance. Plus, my legs don't get cold in the summer. So it's short socks for me.

Try the Assos outlet for good deals and good (but not great) short socks.

Smartwool work for me, but I'll say that a lot of my backpacking friends like Darn Tough - for hiking, anyway.
