You know there are a ton of sweet bikes there FS, you could stay for a month facilitating for PL folk...

Have fun, we did a recon in 2006 to Ft. Collins, Denver & Colo Springs. Deciding where to move that wasn't staying in Nashville or the south after 9 years of hot humid summers and tornados. We wound up here in PDX, wife did a CO Vito on me.... I liked it there and was game to relocate to CO.

Cañon City is a really beautiful and under-appreciated area of the state. It’s also pretty hot in August, just FYI.

Be prepared to be pretty self contained/self supporting.

I just came back from CO and it was somewhat shutdown. Went across Kansas to get there and it was quite shut down in some places. Interstate areas were functioning so gas and fast food not a problem. Lawrence KS downtown was a ghost town.

Not saying don't go, just be prepared for less than normal services. Your description of your trip sounds like you should be fine.

I have 2 weeks and am heading to Jackson, WY this Saturday. Planning time there and then Ketchum and Stanley, ID on the way home. Packing my van, bringing road, gravel, and mountain bikes, planning a short backpack trip and planning on having a great time!
I just saw a report stating that Jackson and other "gateway" towns to Yellowstone and Glacier are swamped with vacationers who wanted to escape COVID 19 in "the wide open spaces". I guess it would behoove one to try to pin down accommodations ASAP.

Anyone entering New Mexico from another state is subject to 14 days of self-quarantine, so you might want to avoid it.

Not close, usually. Just that there are other spots that are higher, greener, wetter. That's where I would be playing in August. Cañon and Fruita/GJ are for when the high country is snowed out.

Since you're just going to be there for a few days you don't want to waste time driving around much.

I'd just go to Durango and do everything from there.

Have fun.

Here in Steamboat everything is riding nice. The dirt roads have been great this year. We have a lot of people here, very busy. Wear a mask when in public places and all is good. Long way up here though. If you do come this way

My wife and I just returned from a driving trip to CO. We drove from Ft Worth.

Coming from anywhere in the TX get as high up in the Rockies as you can and cool off. We were in the Vail area with road bikes and had a great week.

Enjoy and travel safe.
