Probably tied together, I saw a BBC article this week, here what struck me was this "Even by today's modern racing standards, his stats remain astonishing. In 1898, for example, he sprinted 1km in 57.6 seconds – the current record set by Dutch cyclist Jeffrey Hoogland is 55.433 seconds." Steel frame and wooden wheels to boot! wow!

Ooh thanks, that should be good. I read this a few years ago; outstanding book with a good look into his life, bike racing and racism the US and Europe at that time.

A great cyclist, who's life, unfortunately, came to an early and sad end.

That drive side pedal is sooooooo close to the boards.

So close that it is resting on the boards. Because this is is posed still photo. Photographic emulsions weren't as sensitive back then, and it required slower shutter speeds to get a good exposure. Photographing moving objects at those slower shutter speeds would have resulted in a blurred image.

Wow, old friend Lynn Tolman is a consultant on this film and has been really involved in his recognition over decades.

There has been some debate as to whether or not this is a pic of Taylor or not. I don't think it's him. He did race at the Salt Palace but I don't think he ever rode a bike without an adjustable "Major Taylor" stem.

Thanks for the heads up. Being an Indy person myself, spent more than a few nights racing at the velodrome in honor of his namesake.
