Tools on pegboard

I am looking for good visual representation/examples of tools consisting of both cycling and non-cycling, being put up on a pegboard for logical and easy access.

First step, don't use pegboard. It's ok but the peg locations can be restrictive. Better to use a normal sheet of plywood and drive nails into it to use as pegs. You can also bend the nails around as needed to create custom holders for tools that need them. Check out #toolboxwars on that instagram thing for some inspiration.

I don't really care what you use or that the choice of pegs/hooks/whatever is that important but the point is doing something.

It's just crazy how much time is saved by having the tools out like this instead of hunting in the toolbox every time you need something.

Toolboxes are for having to take your tools places, not for your workshop.

I have a setup that's not pegs, it's hooks with all the different modular attachments that go on the board and fit different tools. My main complaint with it is occasionally one of the mounts will fall out when removing a tool.

Realistically I think just about anything would work.

I agree with the Friar.

When I last did it I used a full sheet of plywood and set it on saw horses and laid all the tools out and arranged and rearranged them until it made sense. I then took a photo and marked where the nails would go. I also drilled pilot holes for the nails.

Tools on pegboard

Iā€™m a fan of pegboard. I do some re-arranging a couple times a year as my workflows and most-used tools change. Much faster and more flexible than plywood. Photo at the link below but it has even changed since this was taken.

Scroll back on my IG for older configurations and some closer views.

I really dislike pegboard, but I suppose that's because the traditional hooks are so likely to come off when you take the tool off of them. Lots of tricks to keep that from happening, but then why not just use a piece of plywood?

Tool chests can be organized, I 'm working on that right now.

My bike tools have not yet got to the point of needing wall space. I dont love pegboards, though I did try. I see great value in being able to change things around for a while until the right tool is in easy reachā€”this may mean having two of somethingā€”one at one end of the (tiny) shop and the another elsewhere. French cleats make it easy to move things around and to get small tool boards, pin boards, etc. Sockets/wrenchs, plumbing, etc. live in tool boxes elsewhere.

When I bought my house the basement already had two separate shop spaces with pegboard. It's a game changer for bike tools. Well, it would be if I ever put the tools back up after using them.

Have like 3 little bins with tools... u have no idea how hard is to find something sometihing sometimes. The problem is that i end up putting the usual used tools in another little box and then that becomes a larger box and i might end up adding another little plastic bin with tools..

Mine looks a lot like the park tools picture with the vertical "slots" instead of square or round holes.

But those are not the tool mounts I have. I have 2 of the panels, which is mostly enough. I have a mix of bike tools, crescent wrenches, pliers, hammers, sockets, quick clamps, etc.. mounted on them.

I think the big gotcha tool that I don't have on mine is the cassette lockring tool. I don't have anything I could put that onto the board with.

Sure, if you're the type of person that has an unorganized toolbox. I'll take my OCD'd organized toolbox over a pegboard (or something similar) any day.

I have pegboard above my workbench but don't use it for much. I have a bench top toolbox with wide drawers. It takes some self discipline, but each drawer has the same type of tools. There's an allen and torq key drawer, screwdrivers, pliers drawer including snapring tools, and a deep drawer with mallets and specialty tools. I have a small tool box under the bench that I fill with essentials when I travel with a bike.

For organization, I also have a tubeless box that contains a Schwalbe air blast, core tools, valve cores, new stem assemblies, small bottles of Orange Seal, and plugs. It also has a patch kit if I really want to save a tire.
