Happy Birthday Coast Guard!

Today is the 223rd birthday of the US Coast Guard, she was only 203 when I first met her...

To celebrate I got out for a bit...

Not sure what this was used for but I'm guessing it dates back to WWII like most of the other stuff on the island...

Took some "wilderness" pics by the river as well... no salmon jumping today as this is too far up river...

This is from my phone, so not as good... but I call this "Damp gravel, my BMC, and fireweed blooming... it was a good day!"

Cool man! First, thank-you and your family for your service. Second, are you in Kodiak? I think you are if I remember correctly. Anyway, we have people in Pt. Lay, North River (Unalakleet), Port Heiden and some other remote villages. I am actually heading up in a few weeks. I will be at Clear AFS for three weeks. Staying in Anderson for part of my assignment then in Healy for the latter part. I am bringing my mountain bike and I am planning to ride as much as I can. Looking forward to riding in Denali and on the countless miles of gravel roads that go off the Parks Hwy. Any tips or suggestions you can pass on? Thanks in advance!

Sweet! Yes, I'm in Kodiak... no idea on riding anywhere else at this point, but I'd say check these guys out:

and here is another good resource:

if you get over to Kodiak for any reason, let me know!

Happy Birthday, though I must say I'm somewhat surprised that the USCG is only 223 years old. I would have guessed that it was older. It looks like you had a good day - that's beautiful country. Enjoy it while you can, the cold is not too far away in your AO.

The origins of the Coast Guard are traced back to Alexander Hamilton establishing the Revenue Cutter Service in 1790 to combat the rum runners. In 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service, International Ice Patrol, and The Life Saving Service were joined to form the US Coast Guard (waterways management was thrown in there as well). In our history as the longest continuous sea-going service, we have been under Dept of Treasury, Transportation, Navy during WWII, and are now under Dept of Homeland Security... It's been quite a journey for the Coast Guard for 223 years and me for 20!

and thank you all for the thank you's!
