64cm Eddy Merckx

I've seen this go around a couple times on eBay. It sure needs a bit of love, but the starting price seems reasonable. As it shows so much rust and is in Wilmington, NC (by the sea, right?), this might best be for someone local who can inspect it for terminal rust. It's clear it's got some, but strangely enough the seller (a bike shop, no less) makes no mention of it whatsoever.

I'm guessing it was submerged during Hurricane Floyd or one of the others that totally flooded the Island.

I called the selling shop about the bike and spoke to the guy who assembled it in the 1980s.

The owner has stopped riding, having reached a certain age (70-something). The builder asserted firmly that the bike has not been water damaged.

He further stated that the frame is likely chromed under the paint and that this combination tends to rust a bit more readily than other finishes.

As far as Landshark paint goes, that's pretty tame.

That Mariposa has been listed on TO CL for over 2 years. I nearly bought it last time I was there, and met with the owner (nice fellow). The internal wiring harness with battery and switch is super cool. And the custom racks. The build is super old school and the helico hubs SUCK. If I bought it I would strip it and rebuild it which would be a crime. The owner said Mike Barry was trying to buy it back from him.

Was anyone else teaching framebuilding in the East Bay in the early 70s?

That's Jeff N's from the Forum - if anyone is interested, I'd suggest sending him a PM on it. I've had to resist the urge multiple times...

Is that the original fork? Looks aluminum.

Yes, that Mariposa fork is Al. Bummer. Also bummer about the tire clearance and the battery op lights. Otherwise, it's marvelous.
