Compression plug for 1-1/8" steel fork?

Compression plugs that I have seem to be designed to use with smaller ID carbon steerer tubes (with thicker carbon walls). For a steel fork with 1-1/8" steel steerer tube, the tube walls are thinner and the ID is bigger, so the compressions plugs don't expand enough to fit tightly in the steerer.

What do other steel fork owners use? Should I just use the old non-removable metal star nut?

Star nut. No reason that a compression plug wouldn't work but it's not lighter, simpler or cheaper than the star nut.

Yeah, it's just not removable, should that need ever arise.

2 downsides: 1- star nut scraped off whatever rust-resistant finish was on the inside of the steerer, and rust started there and there only. A fixable problem of course, but also avoidable. 2- Can't really just remove it. (of course you can, it's just a pain since you need to cut it apart to get it out)

My choice would be to find a compression plug that expands enough. I have some that will, they're just no-name generic plugs. OP - perhaps you can take the fork to a local shop and ask them if they have a plug that will expand enough?

I've had trouble with star nuts slipping in steel forks, particularly with my Ahearne.

Then I got one from Chris King, as recommended by Joseph Ahearne, and it hasn't happened since.
