Tres Amigos. Bay Area Triple. Need advice.

So I live in the Bay Area and have been targeting a ride known as "Tres Amigos". If you are familiar with Northern California, it is Tamalpais, Diablo, and Hamilton in one day. For me, it will be door to door in one sitting. If anyone reading has done it I would appreciate your route. The part that intimidates me is that I think I will have to do some highway riding for sure. I got gear, fitness, and food figured out. What I really need help with is routing. Any advice and insider knowledge is appreciated.

Plenty of good options doing Mt Diablo and Hamilton in the same day. And while Mt Tam and the vicinity are great rides, getting from there to the other two seems tough WRT crossing bridges and urban areas.

I'd go plan a route that includes Diablo, Hamilton, and Sierra road (something like DMD - lite). Bigger and badder climbs, w/o the headache of traversing bike-unfriendly areas.

+1. But if it were me and I was dead set on it, I’d start in San Jose and do Hamilton first then diablo and then go across the carquinez bridge and do all the flat junk miles and climb tam last.

Brutal day. Hope you have a couple days off to recover

Check out this post from Ted King

Here's the Strava with the CalTrain and Bart Transfer points included in the routing
Strava link: Oh, MSR was today? Neat. So was #3peaksSF. And they were jealous.

yeah, i reviewed the ted king day but no trains for me.

i start/live in San Francisco so heading south first sounds like a pain. if i go north first i really just need to cross the golden gate then start climbing. and the climbs (i feel) are more equally spaced...

The Tam-Ham-Diablo route makes sense from your SF start, but getting home from Diablo seems to be a giant nuisance. If you don't want to take the train, consider the ferry from Oakland for the return :-)

Great advice, was going to say something similar. Epic route!

You're a stronger man than I. Even when I was comfortably doing double centuries ten years ago, I wouldn't have considered riding this entire route.

What if you put a trainer or a set of rollers on the ferry?

Ride from Oakland to Treasure Island, then get on the Muni 25 bus for the western span of the Bay Bridge?

I wouldn't try to ride across the richmond-san rafael bridge.

If you take the ferry to and from sausalito, then take the ferry over to oakland and ride diablo, then down to hamilton, then back up into the city you'll probably end up doing 200 miles.

Apparently the bike lane on the Richmond San Rafael bridge opens in May

Any last minute tips? Less than a week out and fitness feels good. Still intimidating as **** tho. Richmond San Rafael Bridge still has no bike path, so we hitting hghwy 37 (prolly round 3am). Flattest way home from San Jose is most likely to head towards Palo Alto then Skyline home?
