I've done this one every year since the beginning. These guys know how to put on an event. Excellent course, best aid stations I've ever experienced, and super cool vibe at the end with live music, delicious food, and good beer!
I will be back for round 5 this year. |

Great event. They warn you pretty strongly not to ride it on a road bike. I did not heed the warning the first time I rode the event a couple of years ago. I got through it fine and had a good time but my brakes got so jammed up with mud in the first hour I had thoughts of pulling out. Glad I stuck with it and planning on going back this year on a bike with V-brakes and 43mm tires.

Still trying to convince the wife to let me do this. Her bday is on Monday and this is on Sunday (which she works so its not like we are going to celebrate her birthday). Will propose to celebrate her bday on saturday and go do this ride with yall after having to skip it the past 2 years.
I will be on my OPEN with 50mils but of course. Btw this and the Cross Mountain Crusher, it will be a couple great rides before D2R2. |

I plan to ride the Checkpoint, but not sure about tires yet. Considering going to 650b with 2.2's which I've seen a few folks have been able to fit. Sent from my VS988 using Tapatalk |

Thinking about farmers daughter this year, it doesn't seem to coincide with any other things I've got going. So cross or mountain bike is a must from looking at the pics? All the other gravel rides I've done seem to bias towards gravel setups ie light to no tread tires 28-35c range. As soon as there are a few steady miles on pavement....you start regretting anything that's knobby. But this looks like real dirt!!!

Most of it is on packed dirt/clay roads. I would definitely prefer to be on my "cross" bike with 700X35 tires. The problem last year was a ton of rain before the event, so the mountain bike sections were deep mud, and even the dirt road actions had sketchy parts. I rode my mountain bike which helped on the rough parts but made the road parts feel much longer. Ideally, it's not so wet this spring, and the tires you mentioned will be the way to go. |

Tires?
What is the minimum size anyone would recommend for this ride?
Also wondering about tread pattern? Thanks |

As far as min tire size, having been riding offroad long before the gravel bike boom, i would say for an event like this a 32 would be about as small as you would want to go, but be prepared to go a little slower and dont be afraid to dismount and walk stuff that looks like it is above your tire's comfort zone. i'll be riding a road bike with caliper brakes and 35mm tires regardless of conditions and adjusting my speed accordingly.

someone will tell you they did it on 25s but I agree with angry, based on what I have ridden around that area 32s is the minimum and it will get better the more you go up. Personally I usually roll with slicks (but seems like last year a little thread helped some out), I don't know how much pavement there is but I can't imagine the whole ride is technical gravel.
Now to wait 3 months and 2 of them in awful weather. edit - I just saw this as well - https://www.bikereg.com/farmers-fatty-gravel-grinder anyone doing this one? Last edited by R3awak3n; 01-25-2019 at 12:13 PM. |

OK, we're in!
Both Madame Bee and I just registered. She has been doing spin classes and crossfit all winter, so I am expecting to be smoked like a cheap dime store see-gar within the first 5 miles. I will be on gravel bike with 40mm tires and she will be on her new Trek Boone with 36mm. BBD
