SOLD: Sean Yates Original Team Issue Merckx Caloi

Alright......this could be super long winded if I were to get into the back story of why I always wanted a Motorola and talk about how my brother bought his Motorola team bike off the back of the truck at Downers Grove back in early 90's, or how good buddy has "the other Yates team bike (more on that later) or the mystique of how well these MXL frames ride, or how Yates is one of the, if not THE best rider to have thrown a leg over these, or yada yada yada.............

Long story short is I got this frame roughly a year ago, and have loved it for what it is but because I have a 4yr old and a 2yr old and strollers, and bike trailers and limited time to ride, and limited time to 'tinker', and limited garage space, I've been slightly on the fence about selling it (it also has Campy which aint my jam) and instead of keeping it and slowly turning it into what I envisioned, it may be perfect for someone as is right now.

But BIGGEST reason why I'm selling is because there's a bike that is for sale in classifieds that qualifies as a bike I've always wanted AND could serve as a "daily driver" so to speak instead of being wall art which is what this bike has served as for the majority of the last 12 months. (I've maybe ridden 25 or 30 times)

So no further ado.....for sale is Sean Yates Motorola team issue frame. It's born date is believed to be '95 and from all the research I and a forumite buddy have done, it is 2 of 2, and my buddy owns 1 of 2. His frame is stamped 3648 and mine is stamped 3649. Thread regarding that found here

I will post more pics tonight but here is how shes currently sitting.

59 square (i'll remeasure tonight)

120 Grammo stem

Campy 10 Centaur

Campy carbon seatpost

32H Open Pros

$1450 plus ship (bike flights should be under $70)

Peak bicycle right there, and with provenance! Shame it is too big for me or I'd be all over that. Still kicking myself for missing the last Caloi that went up.

Great looking bike, unfortunately timing and size are a little off for me. I think Zemana and Andreu were the few that were bigger by just a hair (60×60 ish). Harder being a pro cyclist that is 6'5"+/- so I'm sure it'll be a stretch to find a Motorola in my size. Still if someone wants the group and wheels for $1k I'd gladly take the frameset and ship the parts out no charge.

Well darn... who has a team issued Merckx that’s a bit smaller? Preferably Telekom.

Awesome. For all of your stated reasons, I won't even start obsessing, but that's really just such a cool bike. Argh, I want to ride that everywhere. So nice.

Good luck forgetting about that one.

It is just enough too large for me to not start rummaging around the house and garage (mine and the neighbors) for things I can sell to buy that with.

It was so cool how the Motorola dudes would set up a sale tent at the Downers Grove race. That was such a great event. So fast.

I went up to the service course in Milwaukee to buy mine. Next door was the Saturn service course. Fun stuff.

GLWS!
