RIP Niki. A real class act.
In 1989 I was at Hockenheim for the German GP. We were in an area where there were a number of vendors selling t-shirts, etc. and a black M5 was slowly making its way through the crowd. As it went by I naturally looked to see who was in it and Niki was behind the wheel.

RIP "The Computer"
I had the pleasure of watching him win the US Grand Prix (West) in 1982 at Long Beach, his first win with McLaren and his first win after returning from retirement.
In those days mere mortals could gain access to the pits during practice. Tucked in my copy of "My Years with Ferrari" I have my then-current New Jersey driver's license with Niki's autograph, along with those of James Hunt, Colin Chapman, Gilles Villeneuve, and one other - possibly Mansell. Always one of my favorites, he will be missed. |

Man, Nikki...bravest man I think I was ever exposed to. Coming back with seared lungs to race for the w/c...it finally caught up with him. I'm going to go on a weeklong crying jag when Mario goes. Watch "Drive like Andretti" on NBC if you haven't. These guys have the cojones beyond our experience.

one of my father's favorite stories to tell was meeting hunt and lauda in long beach in 1976. he interviewed hunt for radio, but only got to speak to lauda. he has autographs from both somewhere.
rest in power mr. lauda |
