The wrap angle can begin with about half of the width hanging off the end of the bar. After a couple of turns, push the excess bar tape inside the bar and install the plug. If it doesn't look good, it's easy to unwrap and fix the problem. Most plugs would not stay in place without the excess material inside the bar.

I've been using Deda tape for many years. Never had a problem.
