I broke a Sram XX1 chain on it's first ride. First ride on my Pivot Mach 4SL. Pre shifted followed by a few pedal strokes to change a gear too clean a little rock move. Out of the saddle going up the move the chain broke. First and only chain I have ever broken. Had a chain tool and quick link and was able to fix it and get home. I was not pleased with it being brand new and all. Only time I've had any issue's with any chains.

Broken chain

Quick link froze coming down from Sunrise Mt Rainier a few years ago. Took out a link or two and off we went. Would have been worse going up as I lost my low gear. 10 spd campy drivetrain but not sure of maker.

On the road, the last time was 1987. I don't carry a chain tool or a spare link. I use SRAM Red chains and keep them clean, lubed and inspected. I don't know how they would break, especially since my full sprint output is about 130 watts. ; )

MTB it's much more common. I've broken a couple of chains and destroyed a few derailleurs.

I have a chain tool integrated with the multi tool I carry.
I have had one break or come apart in last 20 years. And that may have been an installation error. Also, like above, have a chain tool as part of multi tool. But have never used it.

I don’t remember the exact timeline, but it was back when 9spd mountain bikes were cutting edge. I don’t recall details but the front derailleur got bent as well. I’ve been 1x off-road ever since.

Never on a road bikes but I’ve seen it happen. I assume installation error or lacking maintenance.

in 100K miles, I've broken ONE chain...

the original 7400 DA chain on my 1991 Spec Allez Epic snapped about 10 miles into a ride.

in a stroke of pure luck, a coworker happened to be driving by just as it happened and I got a ride in his PU back to the casa.

since this was before cell phones, it would have been a miserable walk...

I've never broken a chain myself either ...but on at least two occasions I've been That Guy who saves someone else's ride because I had a chain tool with me.

I'm cool with that.

In the 80's and early 90's a chain or two was inevitably dropped on the floor during the first significant climb in a road race. They were always Shimano chains.

Once many years ago racing a moped up a stupid steep hill. I think it was a Suntour chain that I had just installed. Bashed knee into hbar and xxxx...well..hurt like hell. Far from the first chain I put together but the failure could have been my fault.
